AUTHORITY OF PETER

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of

  • heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall

be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Matt 16:18-19

slide-14
SLIDE 14

THE GREAT COMMISSION

All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to

  • bserve all that I have commanded you.

Matt 28:18-20

SACRED SCRIPTURE

Correct interpretation depends on extensive knowledge of the culture at the time, and the style and literary genre being used by the writer. It requires understanding of the original language used. Scripture is written in multiple literary genres and three languages, Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. The Magisterium interprets and reveals the meaning of Sacred Scripture.

3-FOLD MISSION

The Magisterium teaches only truths handed down to us from the Apostles.

Teach

– Attend Mass on all Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. – Confess our sins at least once a year. – Receive the Eucharist during the Easter season. – Observe the Church’s days of fasting and abstinence. – Help provide for the needs of the Church.

THE EXTRAORDINARY MAGISTERIUM

The Holy Father, Peter’s successor, when speaking “ex cathedra” (from the Chair of Peter). The Bishops, the Apostles’ successors, when they gather as an ecumenical council in concert with the Pope.

Who holds infallible authority?

slide-27
SLIDE 27

DOGMAS

Divinely revealed Solemnly declared Infallible Irrevocable Binding Dogmas are teachings infallibly proposed by the Extraordinary Magisterium as divinely revealed.

slide-28
SLIDE 28

DOGMA EXAMPLES

  • There are three persons in one Divine

Essence.

  • The body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus

are truly present in the Eucharist.

  • Baptism is necessary for salvation.
  • The dead will rise again on the last day

with their bodies.

  • Grace can be increased by good works.
slide-29
SLIDE 29

DOCTRINE

All teachings of the Church in matters of faith and morals.

slide-30
SLIDE 30

ORDINARY MAGISTERIUM

slide-31
SLIDE 31

ORDINARY MAGISTERIUM

Teachings on faith and morals not likely to change over time. ▪ Non-infallible: Teachings subject to limited error; reformable. ▪ Infallible: Universally held teachings over a long period of time.

slide-32
SLIDE 32

HOW MUCH DOCTRINE MUST WE BELIEVE?

All of it!

slide-33
SLIDE 33

MUST WE ASSENT?

“It is sometimes claimed that dissent from the Magisterium is totally compatible with being a ‘good Catholic’ and poses no obstacle to the reception of the sacraments. This is a grave error that challenges the teaching office of the Bishops of the United States and elsewhere.”

Pope Saint John Paul II

slide-34
SLIDE 34

TWO LEVELS OF ASSENT

Infallible Doctrine

Assent of faith (the heart) Beyond all doubt

Non-infallible Doctrine

Assent of intellect (mind) Beyond reasonable doubt

slide-35
SLIDE 35

DISCIPLINARY DECREES

Are not divinely revealed. Are not doctrine or dogma. Not binding.

Example: Priests cannot marry. Do not pertain to faith and morals.

slide-36
SLIDE 36

PRUDENTIAL JUDGMENTS

Do not pertain to faith and morals. Example: Comments on the environment.

HOWEVER …

  • We must not contradict what has already

been defined.

  • We must be willing to submit our

interpretations to the final judgment of the Magisterium!

slide-50
SLIDE 50

THE LAST WORD

We get our faith from the teachings of Jesus and the

  • Apostles. We, the Catholic Church, did not make the
  • faith. We received it, from Jesus Christ. We receive it

as He gave it. We do not change it to suit ourselves!

Divine Revelation

  • In His goodness and wisdom God chose to

reveal Himself and to make known to us the hidden purpose of His will (see Eph. 1:9) by which through Christ, the Word made flesh, man might in the Holy Spirit have access to the Father and come to share in the divine nature (see Eph. 2:18; 2 Peter 1:4). Dei Verbum

  • CCC 51 "It pleased God, in his goodness

and wisdom, to reveal himself and to make known the mystery of his will. His will was that men should have access to the Father, through Christ, the Word made flesh, in the Holy Spirit, and thus become sharers in the divine nature.“ Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC)

slide-57
SLIDE 57

Deposit of Faith

  • The Catholic Church defines the "Deposit of

Faith" as the teachings of the Catholic Church that are handed down since the time of the Apostles through Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. These two are known as the "Deposit of Faith.

  • It is clear, therefore, that Sacred Tradition,

Sacred Scripture and the teaching authority

  • f the Church, in accord with God's most

wise design, are so linked and joined together that one cannot stand without the

  • thers, and that all together and each in its
  • wn way under the action of the one Holy

Spirit contribute effectively to the salvation

  • f souls. Dei Verbum
  • 2 Tim 1:14 - By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the

good deposit entrusted to you.

slide-58
SLIDE 58

Sacred Scripture

  • The books of both the Old and New Testaments in

their entirety are sacred because written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, they have God as their author and have been handed on as such to the Church herself.

  • Bible reading is for Catholics. The Church

encourages Catholics to make reading the Bible part of their daily prayer lives. Reading these inspired words, people grow deeper in their relationship with God and come to understand their place in the community God has called them to.

  • Reading isn't enough. If Scripture remains just

words on a page, our work is not done. We need to meditate on the message and put it into action in our lives. Only then can the word be "living and effective."(Hebrews 4:12).

  • 2 Tim. 3:16-17 - All scripture is inspired by God and is useful

for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

slide-59
SLIDE 59

Sacred Tradition

  • Sacred Tradition comes from Christ. It’s the

full, living gift of Christ to the Apostles, faithfully handed down through each generation.

  • Orally by the apostles who handed on, by

the spoken word of their preaching, by the example they gave, by the institutions they established, what they themselves had received - whether from the lips of Christ, from his way of life and his works, or whether they had learned it at the prompting of the Holy Spirit.

  • In writing by those apostles and other men

associated with the apostles who, under the inspiration of the same Holy Spirit, committed the message of salvation to writing.

slide-60
SLIDE 60

Sacred Tradition

  • Examples – Jesus is both human and

divine, Pope is Vicar (representative of Christ), Celebration of the Eucharist as center of Christian life. Christ is truly present in the Eucharist, Immaculate Conception of Mary.

  • 2 Thess. 2:15 - Therefore, brothers, stand firm

and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.

slide-61
SLIDE 61

Magisterium

  • The magisterium of the Catholic Church is

the church's authority or office to give authentic interpretation of the Word of God, "whether in its written form or in the form of Tradition.“

  • Mt. 16:18-19 - And so I say to you, you

are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of

  • heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall

be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
