Safety (cont.)

It is crucial to remain safe while at a worksite. There are multiple guidelines to follow that allow you to maintain the protection of yourself as well as others.

slide-4
SLIDE 4

Guidelines

 Wear safety equipment that is provided  Follow Loss Prevention Manual given to you  Pay special attention to all signs that dictate a

certain type of hazard

slide-5
SLIDE 5

Importance

These guidelines are important to follow closely due to the fact that you want to make sure and return home in the same state that you left.

Professionalism is imperative to the workplace:

  • Become noticed by your employers
  • Creates a better atmosphere
  • Maintains communication
  • Ensures good performance

  • Sixteen County within District 3
  • Bay,
  • Calhoun,
  • Escambia,
  • Franklin,
  • Gadsden,
  • Gulf,
  • Holmes,
  • Jackson,
  • Jefferson,
  • Leon,
  • Liberty,
  • Okaloosa,
  • Santa Rosa,
  • Wakulla,
  • Walton, and
  • Washington.

Within District 3 there are two FDOT Headquarters. One of the two is in Chipley located in the county Washington and the

  • ther in Tallahassee in the county of

Leon.

Department of Environmental Management Office

The role of the FDOT State Environmental Management Office is to develop and ensure the implementation of quality environmental policies, procedures and practices in the development of transportation improvements through each of the Department's core processes: plan, produce, deliver and maintain. Establish policy and procedures to ensure implementation of environmental programs and initiatives of the Department.

slide-12
SLIDE 12

Coordinate with federal and state environmental resource and regulatory agencies in the development and implementation of environmental processes and procedures consistent with environmental laws and regulations to assist the Department in achieving its mission.

The Florida Department of Transportation has a responsibility for the construction and maintenance

  • f the states roads and bridges. They Spend millions
  • f dollars on Materials to make safer and more

efficient roads and bridges each year.

slide-14
SLIDE 14

Bituminous Materials: Asphalt Pavement Structural materials: Research, testing, inspections, and Analysis of the structural materials. Pavement materials: Ensure safe and Durable pavement systems. Geotechnical materials: Underlying Materials such as, soils and aggregates.

slide-15
SLIDE 15

All completed construction project must have a written certification from the SMO( State material office) to ensure that the materials used conform to plans and specifications.

FDOT doesn’t just go out and lay cement and asphalt and call it a day…. They have to go and seek the by best way to create roadways for the surrounding communities. They have to plan step by step the most resourceful equipment to do the job. A vital aspect is surveying the routes and land structures.

slide-18
SLIDE 18

Surveyors measures topographic features, which is anything physical on a piece of paper. Examples of topographic:

  • Buildings
  • Roadways
  • Railroads
  • Trees
  • Ditches
  • Mountains/hills
  • Property line

Surveyors gather data and analyze the data. Then testes the data for certain tolerance levels.

slide-19
SLIDE 19

CADD is a essential component to surveyors and

  • mapping. CADD is computer Aided Design
  • Drafting. Using these features is difficult, yet fairly
  • easy. Surveyors go out and examine the land

setting points or dots which shows up on the computer, the dots are connected to portrait the land and its features. Helping the planning, design, and Right of Way departments easier.

Before construction can begin, sometimes FDOT needs to acquire personal property. Presented by: Allison Morrison

Appraisals and Negotiations

 Notification  Estimated value  Personal appraiser  Compensation

  • Receive offer
  • Real estate closing
  • Compensation and

relocation

  • Circuit court

Maintenance

slide-24
SLIDE 24

Why is Maintenance Performed?

 Maintenance is performed

in order to get the most value out of a project that has already been constructed

 d

slide-25
SLIDE 25

Maintenance Operations

 Bridge Repair and

inspections

 Road Repair and

inspections

slide-26
SLIDE 26

Summary

 Maintenance is used in order to make sure public

transportation is safe and is used to make a project last longer until it’s next replacement

slide-27
SLIDE 27

Planning

 Collects input and info on existing systems  Develops 5-Year Transportation Plan  Alternatives are investigated by PD&E

slide-28
SLIDE 28

Work Program

 Programs finances for each phase  Handles overall project financing  Funding behind production management

slide-29
SLIDE 29

Production Management

 Maintains project schedule according to work program

slide-30
SLIDE 30

OIS

 Keeps the district working and connected  Refurbishes computers for market use  Maintains stockpile of “fixer-uppers”

slide-31
SLIDE 31

planning is the first step in all the project phases

Planning

slide-32
SLIDE 32

Planning Tools

 GIS- Geographic Information System.  Desktop mapping system.  Presents objects, displays objects in the real world.  Surveying is used to make these models and maps.

slide-33
SLIDE 33

Planning

Planning departments have to require this information.

 Los – level of service. Graded on the amount of traffic.  Trips- the vehicle trip added to a roadway.  AADT- average annual daily traffic.  PHPD- traffic travelling in peak direction during peak hour.

slide-34
SLIDE 34

Planning

Also in planning research is required on the following.

 Environmental impacts  Public impacts  Future design  Project scope

Different Types of Design:

  • Roadway Design
  • Project Management
  • Structures
  • Drainage
  • VE (Value Engineering)
slide-43
SLIDE 43

Roadw adway y Design ign

  • Is the creation of what the road will appear when the said

road is complete.

  • This includes the structure of the road, safety additions, and

even the angle of the road.

  • Safety
  • Clear Zone
  • Barriers for Dangerous Turns/ Intersections.
slide-44
SLIDE 44

Project Management

  • The “Coach” of the Design Team.
  • Coordinates everyone in the Project.
  • Dictates the man hours (Staff Hours).
  • Helps select the Consultant.
slide-45
SLIDE 45

Structures.

  • Helps Design the materials.
  • Develops the Type of Bridge/ Building.
  • Develops the Statistics of the

Bridge/ Building.

  • Designs the loads.
slide-46
SLIDE 46

Drainage

  • Rural Drainage Vs. Urban Drainage.
  • Rural:
  • Cross Drains.
  • Side Drains/ Ditches.
  • Urban:
  • Storm Sewers.
slide-47
SLIDE 47

Val alue e En Engine ineerin ering

  • The process of determining how you can save money
  • n a project.
  • Value Engineering can save the FDOT money by,

developing a reduced project, discovering cheaper products that can still do the same thing.
