5 ELEMENTS OF A GOOD SEARCH

• Use PICO format/Concept 1-2-3 for research questions.
• Search each concept one at a time to be combined later.
• Select appropriate keywords and subject headings for PICO

elements/each concept.

• Apply limits at the very end of the search.
• Verify results are relevant to your research question.

• Takes your question and puts it into a researchable format

We search the database record not the full text of the article. Subject Headings

SUBJECT HEADINGS

What are Subject Headings?

• Controlled vocabulary indexing the article’s

content. Subject specialists index the article by tagging it with controlled vocabulary from a standardized

• list. e.g. critical care unit is Intensive Care Units
• Organized in a hierarchical structure which

allows for searching at various levels of specificity.

• Articles are indexed to the most specific

subject heading eg. Intensive Care Units, Neonatal

KEYWORDS

• Search words that you create. They are found in the database record

(e.g. title, subject headings, and abstract)

• It takes a few months for articles to be indexed with subject headings
• Sometimes an appropriate subject heading is not available
• Indexing errors/omissions
• Completeness of your search
