BY THE END OF THE SESSION YOU WILL HAVE LEARNED HOW TO…

  • Select the best database for your research
  • Use PICO to structure your search
  • Develop and improve searches by extending or narrowing your search using OR,

AND, & Limits

  • Leverage keywords and subject headings in your searches
  • Save searches and set up alerts to stay current

5 ELEMENTS OF A GOOD SEARCH

  • Use PICO format/Concept 1-2-3 for research questions.
  • Search each concept one at a time to be combined later.
  • Select appropriate keywords and subject headings for PICO

elements/each concept.

  • Apply limits at the very end of the search.
  • Verify results are relevant to your research question.

4

PICO

  • Answers the question, “WHAT am I searching?”
  • Takes your question and puts it into a researchable format

PICO – BUILDING A SEARCH STRATEGY

  • Using handout –
  • Organize question into its component parts – PICO/Concept 1-2-3.
  • Brainstorm synonyms for your concepts, if appropriate

RESEARCH GUIDES Nursing Research Guide http://guides.library.ubc.ca/nursing * Answers the question, “WHERE do I search?”

10

CINAHL

  • Key resource in nursing, with coverage of over 2700 nursing and allied

health journals from 1982 to present

  • Also includes records for some books, pamphlets, dissertations,

audiovisuals, standards of practice, practice acts, critical pathways, research instruments, and government publications

INTRODUCTION TO NAVIGATING CINAHL

  • CINAHL Headings
  • Keywords
  • Searches

– Create account and save searches – Delete unwanted lines (really nice!) – Combine lines – Edit searches

  • Add Limits
  • Saving records to a folder for later

12

KEYWORDS AND SUBJECT HEADINGS

DATABASE RECORD

We search the database record not the full text of the article. Subject Headings

14

SUBJECT HEADINGS

What are Subject Headings?

  • Controlled vocabulary indexing the article’s

content. Subject specialists index the article by tagging it with controlled vocabulary from a standardized

  • list. e.g. critical care unit is Intensive Care Units
  • Organized in a hierarchical structure which

allows for searching at various levels of specificity.

  • Articles are indexed to the most specific

subject heading eg. Intensive Care Units, Neonatal

15

KEYWORDS

  • Search words that you create. They are found in the database record

(e.g. title, subject headings, and abstract)

  • It takes a few months for articles to be indexed with subject headings
  • Sometimes an appropriate subject heading is not available
  • Indexing errors/omissions
  • Completeness of your search

REVERSE ENGINEERING

Reverse Engineering in a library research context: 1. Using an article that is on-topic 2. Look it up in CINAHL & PubMed 3. Reuse the subject headings in a new search
