Strawberry Hydroponics with Monitoring System Final Review Final Progress All sensors work Full-scale unit with plants built on Phils farm EC sensor still not electroplating EC sensor accurate to plus or minus 150
Final Progress
- All sensors work
- Full-scale unit with plants
built on Phil’s farm
- EC sensor still not
electroplating
- EC sensor accurate to
plus or minus 150 PPM
- Relay cutting pump off
with use of water level sensor
Personal Observations
Ryan: Very easy-to-build design but might not survive for more than a few years without replacement Ray: Electrical system is made comprehensible, but could be more advanced if not limited by DIY form
- f implementation.
Kevin: Mechanical system seems like it will function well enough. Construction went smoothly enough, confident Phil can replicate what we did. Thierno: Theoretically, scaling is feasible which is
- great. What will happen to the structure and the
electronics in extreme weather? Jerry: Designing the software for the system seems straightforward but implementing the code with the external electronics prove to be a challenge Nate: Simple design one all materials are purchased, system has potential for leaks but can easily be
- sealed. Electrical system could be made easier to
implement with more expensive sensors
Potential Future
- Making this widely available allows for others to copy and improve upon the
design
- Invest more? Hard to tell without knowing how well strawberries grow
- Higher quality sensors could be added such as temperature and a higher
resolution water flow sensor
- Add more electrical outlets to electrical box
- Design will be iterated at least 4 more sets of 5 channels according to Phil.
Possibly more after that will small variation on the design.
- Some sensors may not be helpful or accurate over time (flow, EC)
- Adjustable channels may still be a good feature to add.
- Best to experiment with slight variations (channels, slope, flow-rate) before
iterating the design too much
What would we have done differently
- Potentially purchase all industrial grade sensors (Atlas Scientific), the cost of
electronics would increase around 200-300 dollars but it would ensure very low maintenance electronically and would make electrical build much easier
- More focus on long term testing of sensors, 1 month was not enough to
ensure they all worked 100%
- Could have added more features to system like easily adjustable channels,
mixing of solution outside of channels, screen, etc.
