School of the Incarnation Mission Statement

The School of the Incarnation embraces an inter-parish community of children with differing gifts. Through collaboration amongst the faculty, parents and other professionals, the School seeks to challenge and support a diversity of learning styles and needs and to nurture a spiritual, intellectual, physical, social and emotional wholeness in its students. With a commitment to professional and catechist development for its faculty and staff, the School of the Incarnation will continue to be grounded in a spirit of openness, rooted in Gospel values and to be attuned to the evolving pedagogy of education. Through instruction, faith formation and Gospel proclamation, students will be called to a greater understanding of their inherent responsibility, as Children of God, to actively participate in a global and technologically advanced society as instruments of justice in the world.

A note from the Principal . . . Dear Parents and Guardians: Blessings to all as we celebrate Catholic Schools Week! We are grateful to the many, many staff member and volunteers who will help with the many events that will celebrate and showcase our wonderful community. Grades close for the 2nd Trimester on March 24th. Please be sure that students are working on long-term projects. These make the perfect activity for a snowy day! I remain ever grateful for your support and the opportunity to serve the families of School of the Incarnation! Many blessings,

  • Mrs. Lisa Shipley, Principal

Join the March!

On Sunday, March 12th, the Archdiocese of Baltimore will sponsor a Catholic schools float in the Baltimore Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. Schools will be invited to stroll down Charles Street for this fun event. Please consider joining the fun by marching to represent School of the Incarnation and Catholic schools. More details will be forthcoming in the weeks ahead. After sharing some information about the primary wing last month, let’s take a look at a few initiatives in the intermediate wing this month! If you took a walk through some of the intermediate language arts classrooms, you would see some familiar reminders of the CAFE and D5strategies that were mentioned as being implemented in the primary wing. What a great thing for our students - continuity can only serve to benefit them in their learning! Many of the students are able to make choices in their book selections for “Read to Self” along with continued choices in writing and word work. Besides the benefit of students making choices, Mrs. Dinsmore and Mrs. Shallow commented that they are much more able to support and enhance individual or small groups of student needs as

  • ther students work independently.

Third grade science sure is exciting, says Miss Westcott’s students! Who wouldn’t want to design marble roller coasters

  • r invent ways to make a Hot Wheels car move without

touching it?? The best part is watching the teams discuss and refine techniques in order to see how different forces can make different outcomes happen! As fourth graders worked at stations involving different types of waves (think sound and light), they were preparing for a 3D technology project that is collaboratively being developed by Mrs. McGuire and Mrs.

  • Santini. The end product should be their own Morse Code

Tool. Third Grade musicians are hard at work, too, applying music reading strategies as they learn to play the recorder. Students work in teams as they engage with games to build fluency identifying note names, performing rhythms and recalling correct finger position.

How to Celebrate Valentine’s Day and Show Inclusion

February, along with its cold weather, brings the mixed feelings of Valentine’s day. Younger children are excited to share Valentine’s with all of their classmates and eat

  • chocolate. For older children, though, Valentine’s day can be
  • stressful. In middle school, and sometimes even intermediate

grades, the talk of who likes who predominates the weeks leading up to February 14. Questions of “getting something” for or from a “crush” are frequently discussed. Even among friends, children can end up being excluded accidentally with friends buying something for people that they consider friends but forgetting some. As a school, we make an effort to keep this stress at a minimum by discouraging any gifts, even gifts for platonic friends, to be given at school. In classrooms that have Valentine’s Day parties (preK through 5), children are expected to give all classmates a Valentine’s card or treat. We talk quite a bit with the children about the day focusing on showing love for others by being kind. Here are some things you can do at home that will help with this message:  Discourage giving of gifts  Instead of giving friends and/or “significant others” gifts, encourage your child to say or do something kind for their friends on or around that day.  The kind deeds could be simple – such as helping carry books, holding the door, or paying a compliment.  Encourage your child to stretch themselves the week

  • f Valentine’s day to reach out with kindness to

classmates that are not in their usual circle of friends.  Consider doing some family service in the month of February to celebrate.

  • Mrs. Spaulding

School Counselor There is no doubt about it… A healthy breakfast is a must for children in order to perform well in school. Roberta Anding, a registered dietitian at the Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, says, “Actively growing children need food at regular intervals to fuel their bodies and brains. Skipping breakfast gives as much as a 10 to 12 hour time frame with no food, and the potential for compromised school performance and irritability.” Please set your child up for a stellar day by fueling their engine before, or on the way to, school. Your child’s teacher can do so much more with a well-nourished child. Vision and hearing make-up day is now Monday, February 13th (This is a change from the original make-up date of 1/31/17). Please have your child bring his/her glasses or contact lenses if they will need to be screened on this day. Please update your child’s Emergency Contact information and if their heath changes, please let me know so I can make a note of it. Although you are only required to give us documentation of a physical on a couple occasions for school, please feel welcome to submit one every year if you care to but especially if they have medical changes. Thank you, Sue Toth, RN School Nurse
