A Change In Our Name

² In the past we have used the acronym ELP, but star-ng this coming school year we have changed our acronym to XLP

Ø this change is coming because of a State-driven ini-a-ve focusing on English Language Proficiency (ELP) standards for English Learners

² This new acronym was selected aKer speaking with other districts about the name they use for their giKed and talented educa-on program ² We wanted to minimize the change but also con-nue to make

  • ur program dis-nct

XLP Mission

² The mission of the Marshalltown Community School District is to nurture students to become personally and intellectually empowered for ci-zenship in a changing world ² The XLP program works to fulfill the district’s mission through suppor-ng accelerated students in becoming life-long learners who are cri-cal thinkers, striving for self-understanding, and demonstrate responsible, global ci-zenship ² The XLP program works to augment the curriculum for accelerated learners and provide them with differen-ated learning in order to support them in reaching their academic poten-al

Changes In Our Identi<ication Process

² Historical Prac,ce – Ø in K-3 the XLP teachers support students who are accelerated learners by working with classroom teachers to differen-ate classroom instruc-on Ø in 4th grade the XLP teachers provide addi-onal enrichment

  • pportuni-es for students in a pull-out seWng. Those students

are selected by using the same process as used in 5th grade for Formal Iden-fica-on Ø Formal Iden-fica-on of students for the XLP program takes place in 5th grade

  • work to iden-fy between 5%-7% of students from the Talent

Pool (con-nued)

Changes In Our Identi<ication Process

  • data used to guide our decisions are the Iowa Assessments (Reading total,

Math total, Science total), District-wide Assessments (i.e., MAP test), CogAT (ap-tude test), evidence of achievement in the classroom, teacher ra-ng scales, and nomina-ons from teachers, parents and/or peers

² The Talent Pool Commi`ee consists of XLP teachers, classroom teachers, principals, and the Director of Special Services ² We look at anonymous student profiles for 12%-18% of students who are recommended to be part of the Talent Pool ² Using Na-onal Norms criteria, we look for 95%-le on the Iowa Assessments during our first examina-on of the talent pool and a CogAT stanine score of 8-9. We then take a second look at our Talent Pool using local norms of the 87%ile

Changes In Our Identi<ication Process

² The Change –

Ø In January 2015, the Office of Civil Rights and U.S. Dept. of

Jus-ce released a joint memo regarding schools’ obliga-ons to ensure that English Learners (ELs) have equal access and par-cipa-on in all aspects of educa-on Ø Through working with the Iowa Dept. of Educa-on and the Area Educa-on Agency, we learned that the XLP program was dispropor-onate, meaning the students XLP was serving did not reflect the demographics of the district Ø To comply with the mandate, the iden-fica-on process was adjusted

slide-7
SLIDE 7

Changes In Our Identi<ication Process

² We con-nue to use the same iden-fica-on process as

  • utlined previously

² The Talent Pool Commi`ee now targets to iden-fy 5% of the students from the Talent Pool ² Following the selec-on process, the Director of Special Services and XLP teachers review the demographic informa-on of students selected for direct service ² If the selected pool does not reflect the demographics of the district then we return to the Talent Pool and ac-vely seek out accelerated learners of the demographics underrepresented

Questions by the Board

How does STEM [science, technology, engineering, math] interact with XLP, especially around “coding”?

² XLP supports students who are interested in “coding” by encouraging them to par-cipate in the PLTW [Project Lead The Way] course focused on computer engineering, AP [Advanced Placement] computer sciences courses offered through Iowa AP Online Academy, and/or C++ Programming

² XLP teachers always work to encourage students to take courses that will be challenging to them ² AP and dual-credit courses are part of the district’s core curriculum so they are open to any student who meets the criteria ² XLP becomes involved with AP coursework if the child’s needs cannot be met through the core curriculum offered to all students

Questions by the Board

How does the district XLP team work together to prepare kids for their goals beyond high school?

² the XLP team works collabora-vely with each other and the educators in their own respec-ve buildings to create learning environments that are challenging to accelerated learners ² XLP works to support accelerated learners social/emo-onal needs, as well as students’ academic needs ² Personalized Educa-on Plans (PEPs) are used as a tool to drive programming and services so schools can smoothly transi-on students between buildings with an understanding of their areas of focus ² XLP teachers and counselors work collabora-vely with students to offer them a variety of opportuni-es to pursue in areas of interests

slide-15
SLIDE 15
