  1. Extended Learning Program [XLP] Summary Presenta-on for the Marshalltown Board of Educa-on July 18, 2016

  2. A Change In Our Name ² In the past we have used the acronym ELP , but star-ng this coming school year we have changed our acronym to XLP Ø this change is coming because of a State-driven ini-a-ve focusing on English Language Proficiency (ELP) standards for English Learners ² This new acronym was selected aKer speaking with other districts about the name they use for their giKed and talented educa-on program ² We wanted to minimize the change but also con-nue to make our program dis-nct

  3. XLP Mission ² The mission of the Marshalltown Community School District is to nurture students to become personally and intellectually empowered for ci-zenship in a changing world ² The XLP program works to fulfill the district’s mission through suppor-ng accelerated students in becoming life-long learners who are cri-cal thinkers, striving for self-understanding, and demonstrate responsible, global ci-zenship ² The XLP program works to augment the curriculum for accelerated learners and provide them with differen-ated learning in order to support them in reaching their academic poten-al

  4. Changes In Our Identi<ication Process ² Historical Prac,ce – Ø in K-3 the XLP teachers support students who are accelerated learners by working with classroom teachers to differen-ate classroom instruc-on Ø in 4 th grade the XLP teachers provide addi-onal enrichment opportuni-es for students in a pull-out seWng. Those students are selected by using the same process as used in 5 th grade for Formal Iden-fica-on Ø Formal Iden-fica-on of students for the XLP program takes place in 5 th grade • work to iden-fy between 5%-7% of students from the Talent Pool (con-nued)

  5. Changes In Our Identi<ication Process • data used to guide our decisions are the Iowa Assessments (Reading total, Math total, Science total), District-wide Assessments (i.e., MAP test), CogAT (ap-tude test), evidence of achievement in the classroom, teacher ra-ng scales, and nomina-ons from teachers, parents and/or peers ² The Talent Pool Commi`ee consists of XLP teachers, classroom teachers, principals, and the Director of Special Services ² We look at anonymous student profiles for 12%-18% of students who are recommended to be part of the Talent Pool ² Using Na-onal Norms criteria, we look for 95 %-le on the Iowa Assessments during our first examina-on of the talent pool and a CogAT stanine score of 8-9. We then take a second look at our Talent Pool using local norms of the 87 %ile

  6. Changes In Our Identi<ication Process ² The Change – Ø In January 2015, the Office of Civil Rights and U.S. Dept. of Jus-ce released a joint memo regarding schools’ obliga-ons to ensure that English Learners (ELs) have equal access and par-cipa-on in all aspects of educa-on Ø Through working with the Iowa Dept. of Educa-on and the Area Educa-on Agency, we learned that the XLP program was dispropor-onate, meaning the students XLP was serving did not reflect the demographics of the district Ø To comply with the mandate, the iden-fica-on process was adjusted

  7. Changes In Our Identi<ication Process ² We con-nue to use the same iden-fica-on process as outlined previously ² The Talent Pool Commi`ee now targets to iden-fy 5% of the students from the Talent Pool ² Following the selec-on process, the Director of Special Services and XLP teachers review the demographic informa-on of students selected for direct service ² If the selected pool does not reflect the demographics of the district then we return to the Talent Pool and ac-vely seek out accelerated learners of the demographics underrepresented

  8. Questions by the Board How many students are accelerated learners compared to the number of students who are non-proficient? ² Enrollment for Marshalltown schools is approximately 5,300 students ² XLP supports 300 students (5%) ² Reading – approx. 2,014 students are not proficient (38%) ² Math – approx. 1,855 students are not proficient (35%) EdInsight data 2015-16

  9. Questions by the Board XLP by Building (2015-’16) XLP Teacher Caseloads ² MHS – 103 students v Susan – 103 students ² MLA – 2 v Ann – 54 ² Miller – 52 v Vanessa – 44 ² Lenihan – 44 v Deb – 55 ² Anson - 14 v Nicole – 44 ² Fisher - 17 ² Franklin - 21 ² Hoglan - 16 * both Deb and Nicole ² Rogers - 17 travel across 3 buildings ² Woodbury - 14

  10. Questions by the Board What supports are available for XLP in the arts and music areas? ² The Extended Learning Program works with community partners to provide enrichment opportuni-es in these areas Ø Examples are… Marshalltown Community Theatre, arts programs at Fisher Community center ² The Extended Learning Program also works to promote internal opportuni-es Ø Examples are...EEE Advanced Art, XLP drama/forensics group

  11. Questions by the Board Beyond classroom instruc@on, how does XLP support giCed students? ² beyond pull-out instruc-on by XLP teachers, Miller middle school offers honors and advanced courses (Geometry, English 9) ² MHS offers honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and dual- enrollment courses for college credit ² offer ac-vi-es/events/clubs (e.g., Lego league, Math team, Ba`le of the Books, Science Olympiad) ² XLP team produces a monthly ar-cle for the district newsle`er that provides informa-on for teachers

  12. Questions by the Board How does STEM [science, technology, engineering, math] interact with XLP, especially around “coding”? ² XLP supports students who are interested in “coding” by encouraging them to par-cipate in the PLTW [Project Lead The Way] course focused on computer engineering, AP [Advanced Placement] computer sciences courses offered through Iowa AP Online Academy, and/or C++ Programming or Web Development courses at MCC ² At the elementary level, XLP teachers sponsor Hour of Code and coding through age-appropriate robo-cs ac-vi-es ² There are also several opportuni-es available outside the school [i.e., Iowa Technology Fair, IT-Olympics]

  13. Questions by the Board How does XLP interact with Advanced Placement (AP) classes and dual-credit courses? ² XLP teachers always work to encourage students to take courses that will be challenging to them ² AP and dual-credit courses are part of the district’s core curriculum so they are open to any student who meets the criteria ² XLP becomes involved with AP coursework if the child’s needs cannot be met through the core curriculum offered to all students Ø Iowa AP Online Academy Ø Independent study course work

  14. Questions by the Board How does the district XLP team work together to prepare kids for their goals beyond high school? ² the XLP team works collabora-vely with each other and the educators in their own respec-ve buildings to create learning environments that are challenging to accelerated learners ² XLP works to support accelerated learners social/emo-onal needs, as well as students’ academic needs ² Personalized Educa-on Plans (PEPs) are used as a tool to drive programming and services so schools can smoothly transi-on students between buildings with an understanding of their areas of focus ² XLP teachers and counselors work collabora-vely with students to offer them a variety of opportuni-es to pursue in areas of interests

  15. Questions by the Board How can the Extended Learning Program reach more low SES and minority kids? ² beyond the changes in our iden-fica-on process, XLP teachers con-nuously talk with teachers and families, looking for students who are demonstra-ng accelera-on in their learning ² when possible, invite students who have a passion for par-cular areas of interest (but have not achieved to the level required for XLP services) to par-cipate in organiza-ons, clubs, and/or ac-vi-es
