WHAT COMMONLY CAUSES SPILLS?

  • Refuelling of site plant/equipment
  • Inadequate storage of chemicals

(e.g. lack of, or inadequate bunding)

  • Equipment hydraulic hose failure
  • Maintenance activities

HOW DO I MINIMISE SPILLS?

  • Place spill response kits at high risk locations and on mobile vehicles / trucks
  • perated in remote areas.
  • Inspect equipment daily - check for leaks.
  • Report all equipment leaks and repair as soon as possible
  • Conduct scheduled preventative maintenance work – do not run equipment until

break-down.

  • Store chemicals on or within bunded areas
  • Inspect storage tanks / containers for any leaks or degradation.
  • Only store minimum amounts of chemicals required – Do not store large quantities

unnecessarily.

  • Use spill trays at transfer points

HOW DO I DISPOSE OF CONTAMINATED MATERIAL?

  • For smaller spills - use existing spill equipment where possible / place material in

waste disposal bags to transport for disposal.

  • Soil can be used to contain spills or alternatively coke breeze is ideal for

hydrocarbon spills.

  • Whyalla Shared Facility - Take oil contaminated soil to the Bioremediation area, but
  • nly after instruction from Site Services
  • Whyalla Shared Facility - Spills to harbour or marine environment are an emergency

and will trigger the Environmental Spill Contingency Plan – QP29.07 Major Emergency and Response (Call Security: 4000)

  • If advice is required for removal / disposal contact Site Services (Ph: 4448).

THE 4 KEY STEPS TO SPILL RESPONSE – 4 C’s……

COMMUNICATE CONTROL CONTAIN CLEAN-UP

Assess the spill, ensure personnel are safe. If safe, stop the source- turn off the valve, plug the hole, divert the flow or shut the machine down – whatever is necessary to stop the spill source. Notify Supervisor as soon as possible. Assess the level of seriousness for all spills / incidents (>Level 2) notify the Environment Department as soon as possible. Prevent or limit environmental damage. Place absorbent & containment material or devices to prevent spread of the spilt material Recover / dispose of what was contained. Clean up spillage and appropriately dispose of contaminated material. Contact Site Services (4448) if assistance is required. Seek help and advice where needed. Report the incident within the Issues Management System (IRMS)
