Nordic Queen Seminar, Stockholm, Nov 9th 2019, Geir Nesheim, Sec Gen, NCF
Share of female members in the Norwegian Chess Federation (NCF) is low –
Other Nordic Countries: ~ 5%
FIDE total: <= 15%
In the autumn of 2016 a committee was mandated by the Board of NCF to «gather data, and try to provide answers to
why women decide in favour of - or against - starting to play chess, and to
what make those who start to play continue - or stop playing
The committe should also suggest initiatives to
increase the share of girls and women in chess, and to Avoid that those who play stop doing so»

The report was finalised in October 2017, and included
a survey of some 110 Norwegain Chess Players, answering relevant questions, and
A review of available litterature on women/girls and chess
The committee suggested some 10 most important initiatives:
Nordic Queen Seminar, Stockholm, Nov 9th 2019 3
1 A conference to present the report 6 Develop tournament formats that would appeal specificaly to women 2 A compaign to convince grown-up chess players to spend as much time on encouraging girls to play as boys 7 Share best pratcice at club-level to the thess society at large 3 Conduct Girl- and Women Chess camps 8 Study how others handle similar issues, e.g. the Bridge Federation and others 4 Develop and promote femaile chess role-models 9 Financial incitaments to those clubs who deliver strong results in hte filed of recruiting women 5 Both sexes represented in school team tournaments 10 Both sexes represented in elite team tournaments
Proposal 1 – the conference – was conducted in March 2019, with broad
participation, also from other organisations, and internationally.
But the other initiatives are all still in the startup phase
Two initatives – 5 and 10 (both sexes in team tournaments) are put on hold – seen
as too premature
Some new initatives are currently considered
A committe to ensure delivery of all prioritized subprojects A fixed agenda point on all Federation Board meetings to discuss chess and women-
issues
Nordic Queen Seminar, Stockholm, Nov 9th 2019 4
Participates in the overall project Has a committe – Jenteutvalget – dedicated to facilitate initiatives to support
girl chess at all levels and formats – with an annual budget
Have a much higher share of girls than the NCF
, but the girls leave quicker/earlier
More is needed also in this area
