Ett samhälle bör betraktas som förlorat om det har dött eller om det enbart består av några få Antal samhällen före vintern hundra bin. Samhällen med drottningproblem, samhällen utan drottning eller med puckelyngel, som inte går att åtgärda bör också betraktas som förlorade. Antal döda samhällen Med vinter avses perioden mellan avslutning av invintringen (infodring och förberedelse av samhällena inför för vintern) och starten på den första dragperioden efter vintern. Läget i de döda samhällena I några av frågorna används begreppet "produktionssamhälle". Definitionen av detta är i det här sammanhanget ett samhälle som man avsett att använda för Antal samhällen efter vintern honungsproduktion eller pollinering, vilket innebär att även avläggare invintrade föregående år kan inkluderas.
