Why Report on Student Performance?
- What do report cards provide? Is the information they provide truly indicative
- f student performance or achievement?
- What are that the true goals at the elementary level?
- Where did the New Jersey Student Learning Standards come from?
- How are standards embedded in everything we do with students?
- How do schools support parents who want to help/provide assistance to
their child?
- Change can be very challenging as it moves us out of our comfort zone.

What are Standards?
Standards are what students should know and be able to do at the end of each grade.

○ Critical thinking and analytical skills vs. rote memorization
- Prepares students for college, career readiness, and life
- Creates globally competitive students
- Based on research
- Promotes high quality teaching AND learning

Why Standards-Based Report Cards?
- Teachers can provide parents with detailed information about their
child relative to growth in specific areas of content
- Provide information about mastery of learning
- Helps teachers tailor education to each student based on needs
- Shows progress toward year-end goals
- Students meet these goals at their own pace
- Parents will get better information about their child as a learner, and
will know in what specific areas they support their child
What was the Process of Enhancing Standards-Based Report Cards?
- Recognized that we needed to update current report card to align with
changes in standards ○ NJCCCS → CCSS → NJSLS
- Created report card revision committee:
○ Grade-level staff ○ Parents ○ Administration
- Two years of collaboration which resulted in the creation of:
○ Revised report card ○ Method for consistent grading across the district

How Will Teachers Assess Their Students?
- The enhanced standards-based report card
will better reflect a student’s growth in specific skill areas, as learning is a process not a product.
- A student’s performance will be measured in a variety of ways,
including home and class work samples, small group and individual conferring notes, projects, and lesson and benchmark assessments.
How Will Teachers Assess Their Students?
- All teachers will use the same criteria to
assess students so that all the schools are aligned across each grade level.
- Performance expectations may change and increase from
reporting period to reporting period in order to establish growth commensurate with instructional progression.
