  11. MAKE A LIST OF SCHOOLS 4 - 6 Schools • Learning environment is more important than a University’s rank. • North or South – the weather does matter! • Big City or Rural environment – do you need a mall to be happy? A place to fish or hike? • Public or Private – a big difference in cost. • Big School or Small School – what college lifestyle do you want?

  12. VISIT COLLEGES • Seniors and Juniors are allowed two days of excused absence to visit universities. • Fill out and turn in the LTHS College Visit form found on the Attendance link on the main web page. Turn in the form to Attendance before your trip. • Bring a letter from the universities that you visit. They will provide you with the letter. Turn the letter in to Mrs. Chalmers in Attendance to excuse your absence.

  14. Reach Schools and Assured Admission Dreams and Wishes are wonderful… so is a sure thing. Assured Admission is a sweet spot where grades and test scores meet the admission requirements of a University. Include one or two schools on your list of 4 - 6 where you know you will be admitted and where you will be happy. Schools that you can afford without incurring large student loan debt. https://www.ltisdschools.org/cms/lib/TX01800016/Centricity/Domain/406/Assured Admissions 2019- 2020.pdf

  15. College Applications • Apply Texas https://www.applytexas.org • Common Application https://www.commonapp.org/ • The Coalition Application http://www.coalitionforcollegeaccess.org/

  16. GRADES and RANKING • You will submit a Sixth Semester Transcript with each application. Ready August 1, 2020. • A Sixth Semester Transcript will contain your grades through the end of your junior year. • LTHS is a non-ranking school except for Top 10% as required by State Law. All ranked transcripts are sent electronically via TREX. • DON’T RELEASE RANK. There is no advantage. • Schools with deadlines in the fall or January 1 will likely not see your senior grades for admission.

  17. GPA – Weighted and Unweighted • Two GPA’s are listed on your transcript: Left side: an average of your weighted grades (100) Right side: unweighted GPA (4.0). • Each course listed will have a fall and spring semester grade plus an average for the year. Semester grades are used to calculate GPA. • Honors points or bump points are not visible on the transcript. Codes indicate the weight of the course.

  18. Ordering Transcripts • Order Official Transcripts from the Registrar in the Main Counseling Office. Allow one week to process. • Watch due dates. We complete requests in order. • All transcripts sent in-state to Texas public schools will be sent through the state data system called TREX. We can track. • Out-of-state public schools may be mailed or sent electronically. Always choose electronic. • Private and out of state schools may be uploaded into Common Application, Sendedu, and Coalition Application.

  19. SAT/ACT TEST SCORES • What are acceptable test scores? • Texas Success Initiative is a good minimum standard. ACT Composite 23, English 19, Math 19 SAT Reading 480, Math 530 No total…. • There is an extra fee, but send scores when you are ready. • Take the writing once. Competitive schools may require. • Use the Assured Admission chart to see if your score is high enough. • There is a difference between an Admission test score and a Scholarship test score.

  22. Financial Aid, Scholarships, FAFSA 1. Filing FAFSA is No Longer Optional School Finance Bill (HB3) Included in HB3 is a requirement for all high school students to complete the FAFSA or TAFSA to graduate, starting with the class of 2021. Students and families may opt-out by requesting waivers. Texas is the second state to make FAFSA completion mandatory. The first state, Louisiana, saw a dramatic increase in FAFSA completions and now has the highest completion rate in the country (according to NCAN, June 2019). 2. Why FAFSA? Universities want to use Federal money first, then endowment monies.
