English 10

  • Challenging, Regents-level course
  • Literature studied includes works such as:

Macbeth, The Catcher in the Rye, The Laramie Project, Fahrenheit 451, Night

  • Regular independent reading is required
  • Intensive writing instruction including narrative,

persuasive, informational, and creative writing

  • A major research paper, minimum five pages
  • Regular study of vocabulary, grammar, and

usage

  • Frequent projects and presentations

English 10 Honors

  • Demanding, Honors-level course that requires student

proficiency and independence.

  • Literature studied includes works such as:

Macbeth, Gilgamesh, The Odyssey, Fahrenheit 451, The Inferno, The Canterbury Tales, Arcadia, and The Stranger

  • Regular independent reading is required, about 100

pages per week

  • Students have already mastered narrative, persuasive,

informational, and creative writing and work on improving their craft

  • A major research paper, minimum five pages
  • Students are required to lead discussions, make

presentations, complete individual and group projects

  • The final project is a fifteen minute TED talk

ADMISSION TO HONORS AND AP CLASSES

  • Any student may apply to enter an Honors or AP class.
  • Advanced classes are recommended for self-motivated

students with excellent reading and writing skills and

  • A grade of A- or better in Regents level classes
  • A grade of B+ or better in honors & AP courses
  • Students not meeting the grade criteria will be admitted on

the basis of

  • Performance in previous classes
  • Teacher recommendations
  • Samples of graded writing
  • Students who did not participate in honors programs previously

are encouraged to apply in eleventh or twelfth grade. Typically, a good number of students are admitted to advanced programs each year.
