  3. Our Approach • Analyse LA and LEP transport and freight plans • Data collection, using EEH ProjectView • Stakeholder Consultation • Scenario forecasts • Strategy development • Work with Transport Systems Catapult to identify opportunities for logistics innovation. www.englandseconomicheartland.com

  4. Progress • Started October 2018 • Data collection / policy review almost complete • Stakeholder Consultation: – Excellent workshop – One to One interviews in progress • Meeting with the EEH Transport Officer Steering Group www.englandseconomicheartland.com

  5. Emerging Issues • Logistics - unprecedented change • Difficult to predict future trends • Data as important as infrastructure • Industry need less or better regulation • Community concerns about freight impacts • The opportunity of growth • Access to ports www.englandseconomicheartland.com

  6. NIC: Future of Freight Regulatory certainty to drive change • Supports common approaches across EEH “Freight is the forgotten element of spatial planning” • Opportunity to fully integrate freight into EEH planning Data for informed decision making • Opportunity for innovation in EEH www.englandseconomicheartland.com

  7. East West Rail • Has the capability to carry freight trains • But capacity will be limited • If there is a business case, EWR will provide capacity • Design standstill Autumn 2019 • Opportunities: – Construction material – Intermodal terminals – Existing trains – Diverted trains www.englandseconomicheartland.com

  8. Logistics Innovation • The study will note all examples and opportunities for innovation such as: – Platooning – Freight pipelines – Zero emissions – Droids and drones • What is the role of EEH? • Making innovation happen in EEH – Last mile / last meter – Freight data collection and use – Collaboration www.englandseconomicheartland.com

  9. Towards a Strategy • EEH Transport Strategy Vision: • Connecting our people and places with opportunities and services • The principles are: • Economy • Quality of Life • Accessibility and Inclusion • Freight strategy elements: – Improving efficiency – Reducing impacts – Innovative and Future Ready www.englandseconomicheartland.com

  10. Proposed Initiatives • Creation of a EEH Freight Partnership Group / Forum • Development of an EEH Data Store including integration with the Regional Evidence Base • Standards for freight provision into transport infrastructure planning and community planning including ‘last meter’ deliveries • “Toolkit” of standards and restrictions for freight in urban areas and construction sites • A standardised approach and methodology to collecting and presenting the evidence and impact of lorry bans www.englandseconomicheartland.com

  11. Proposed Initiatives • Actions to improve efficient use of freight vehicles • Actions to support modal shift • Proposals for freight on East West Rail • Innovation: data sharing and collaboration along the East West Corridor • Improving freight links to ports and alternatives to the Golden Triangle of Logistics www.englandseconomicheartland.com
