 HES Leadership Team met August 28th  Discussion on Engage NY Math and who

was implementing.

 Decision was made to have all teachers

K-6 to implement Engage NY Math

 Discussion on Engage NY ELA and who

was implementing.

 Decided to not require K-3 at this time.

Faculty Meeting

 Teachers met on Tuesday, September 2nd  We spoke to the K-3 on Engage NY Math  I requested to my staff K-2 that I would give

them two weeks to review and implement their first math lesson.

 Questions on materials and assistance  I ask them to look to each other for resources

as well as help.

 I wanted feedback after the lessons were

taught.

With Big Eyes and a look of Puzzlement

 They were willing to review  They ask questions  They searched, reviewed and talked  Within two weeks they had implemented

their first lesson.

 Then the real discussion began……….

They were animated, excited and talking about what the kids were doing. The kids were figuring it out.

As For Me

 I didn’t have to call a meeting.  I watched and listened to the

conversation among my staff.

 The lessons are there and free. The work is

in the preparation to get it together to

  • teach. And it is work.

 It has rigor, which is needed.  The teachers have buy in.  Envision is used as supplemental.

 Grades 5 and 6 implementing  3rd and 4th grade are looking to add.  It is rigorous.  Primary is using Pearson Reading Street

  • text. (12 yrs. old)

 Rigor is lacking in the materials

We are often called old school

 We teach spelling and phonetics  Grade K-4 use the Reading Street series

spelling word list.

 Grades 5 and 6 use CCS word bank  We teach handwriting, print and cursive  We model, model and model  We teach and learn together.

 Strategically decompose 1.57 to round to the

nearest whole and the nearest tenth using a vertical number line.

 Miles incorrectly gave the product of 7 x 2.6 as

14.42. Use a place value chart or an area model to help Miles understand his mistake.

third of the drinks were grape and two-thirds were

 Jenny’s mom says she has an hour before it’s bedtime.

Jenny spends 3/5 of the hour texting a friend and 3/8 of the remaining time brushing her teeth and putting on her
