  1. Energy Summit 2018 GREENFIELD GLOBAL John Wilkinson , SVP Sustainability June 21, 2018 Presented by

  2. “Pride Goeth Before the Fall” ◆ We are the only species on Earth who believes in the concept of waste. ◆ Every other species lives within the balance provided by Mother Nature , whereby there is no waste, just endlessly recycled resources. ◆ In a fight between our species and Mother Nature , who do you think will win?? GREENFIELD GLOBAL 1

  3. It’s all about what we learned in Grade 5 ◆ Carbon Cycle ◆ Water Cycle ◆ Photosynthesis ◆ Plus … GREENFIELD GLOBAL 2

  4. …..Endless Recycling ◆ In the natural world, there is NO waste. ◆ The waste from one species is the resource for another. ◆ What happens when we ignore this truth?? GREENFIELD GLOBAL 3

  5. CLIMATE CHANGE Every day humans are: Extracting fossilized carbon from below ground, Burning(oxidizing) it, and Pouring 100 megatonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This is unsustainable GREENFIELD GLOBAL 4

  6. We need to stop this upward trend, and soon GREENFIELD GLOBAL 5

  7. The Bio-economy is a big part of the solution FROM: TO: Below Ground Above Ground Fossilized Organic Oil & Gas & Coal Agriculture & Forestry Waste Resource GREENFIELD GLOBAL 6

  8. The Bio-economy Is In Our Genes GREENFIELD GLOBAL

  11. Who is Greenfield Global? In Canada: #1 Producer of fuel ethanol In North America: 20% Market share of Pharma Grade Alcohol Globally: Major supplier of industrial alcohol to 60+ countries In Ontario & Quebec we are: • #1 Purchaser of Corn GREENFIELD GLOBAL • #1 Supplier of DDGS • #6 Consumer of Natural Gas 10

  12. Who is Greenfield Global? We are a large GHG emitter captured under Cap & Trade in Ontario & Quebec. So what’s a nice bio -based company doing paying for fossilized carbon? GREENFIELD GLOBAL 11

  13. Greenfield Global has a Vision to get back to <350 ppm CO2 To align with our sustainability vision we look for opportunities to offset CO2 Cap & Trade costs and lower the carbon intensity of our products. GREENFIELD GLOBAL 12

  14. Sustainability project examples Truly Green CO2 and Waste Heat in Chatham, Ontario CNG Station to replace fuel oil in Mt. Forest, Ontario SEMECS joint venture in Varennes, Quebec R & D for TSE > AD2 > GTL > Drop in Jet Fuel, Chatham, Ontario ILÔt R &D for alternate feeds to ethanol, Varennes, GREENFIELD GLOBAL Quebec 13

  15. The SEMECS Location – Varennes, south shore of Montreal GREENFIELD GLOBAL 14

  16. SEMECS Basics Our Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facility is a joint venture between Greenfield Global and the S ociété d' é conomie m ixte de l' e st de la c ouronne s ud (SEMECS), ie 3 regional governments comprised of 27 municipalities, c. 270,000 residents. Processes 40,000 tonnes/year of source separated organic waste generated by residents on the South Shore of Montréal. GREENFIELD GLOBAL Plant is being commissioned in Q2, 2018. Project received 2/3’s provincial capital funding. 15

  17. SEMECS Basics The Joint Venture allows: Greenfield Global to use the biogas produced by the AD to reduce our Varennes ethanol plant’s GHG footprint by 15%, helping us to meet our <350 Vision. The 27 municipalities to meet the pending organic waste ban in Quebec and reduce the costs borne by their ratepayers. GREENFIELD GLOBAL 16

  18. SEMECS Basics 1. The 27 Municipalities have a 20 Year commitment to feed the plant with diverted source separated organic waste: • Segregate • Collect • Transport 2. Greenfield Global has a 20 Year agreement to: • Purchase the AD biogas (pipeline across the road) • Feed DDGs Driers • Reduce CO2 footprint 3. Greenfield Global Ideally positioned to oversee: GREENFIELD GLOBAL • Technical and financial structure • Plant construction • Plant operation 17

  20. SEMECS Pictures from December 2017 GREENFIELD GLOBAL 19

  21. Why do this? In 2015, Ontario generated 3.7 Million tonnes of Organic Waste. 1.34 Million tonnes was diverted from landfills to compost or AD. 2.36 Million Tonnes was landfilled. GREENFIELD GLOBAL 20

  22. Ontario organic waste by type GREENFIELD GLOBAL 21

  23. Sources of Organic Waste GREENFIELD GLOBAL 22

  24. Organic Waste in Landfill is a Big Challenge Organic waste in landfills has an environmental impact. Organic waste decomposition produces methane that is 25 times more potent than CO2 in terms of global warming potential. Decomposition also produce leachate that can contaminate groundwater. GREENFIELD GLOBAL It costs ratepayers $$ to tip waste into a landfill. 23

  25. Will Ontario follow Quebec? Ontario passed the Waste Free Ontario Act and has created a Food and Organic Waste Framework in 2017. One component of the action plan is to ban organic waste to landfills by 2022. The action plan will provide support for diversion and recovery facilities. GREENFIELD GLOBAL 24

  26. And it gets better AD biogas (methane) can be cleaned up to pipeline specs by taking out the sulphur dioxide and injected into the pipeline. Ontario, as part of its Climate Change Action Plan, is actively considering mandating RNG into the Natural Gas supply. To be economically feasible, the RNG will have to receive a subsidy from the province’s Cap & Trade proceeds. Natural gas companies are seeking RNG sources, near existing GREENFIELD GLOBAL pipelines, in anticipation of the mandate. Stay Tuned. 25

  27. Takeaways ◆ Humanity is fighting against Mother Nature and she will win, she always does. ◆ The world needs above ground carbon, to break our addiction to below ground carbon. That’s our future. ◆ Look at your existing waste streams and uncover its value as a resource for others. GREENFIELD GLOBAL 26
