  1. Elementary Math Pilots Conclusion: Math Expressions

  2. Mathematics Curriculum We believe that best instructional practice is supported with the best curricula materials. Mathematics materials must develop a strong number fluency and promote problem solving skills. We believe that Math Expressions is a balanced program that best supports our students, teachers, and parents in developing a stronger mathematical understanding and leads to improved mathematical abilities.

  3. About Math Expressions - Single author: Dr. Karen Fusion - Spiral curriculum - helps students to retain/practice skills - Concrete - Fluency - Algorithms - Differentiation for all learners - Online practice/resources - Quick checks to progress monitor learning - Brings misconceptions to light - “find the mistake” activities - Novel problems for increase of transfer of skills - Real world connections - Multiple opportunities to review and reteach content for students to learn/master

  4. What are parents saying? “I am very happy and satisfied with this math program. My daughter feels she is "good" at math. Confidence is half the battle!” “I really enjoy the homework that comes home. I like to see the new things they have learned on the "homework" side and I like the practice of the "remembering" page because it helps him stay current on past learned practices.” “My child has improved immensely over the year! It is absolutely amazing at how well she is doing and how far she has come since the beginning of the year. She could barely identify any numbers at all and now she is doing addition and subtraction like it's a piece of cake!” “Very impressed so far! Thank you for piloting the program and asking for feedback!”

  5. Parent Plan to Support 1. Parent Night(s) - about the curriculum, how to support their child(ren), and how to engage in the learning 2. Teacher/School Communication - consistent, clear, intentional messages for parents 3. Parent Information - how to access online and booklets to support/explain

  6. What are teachers saying? “The program is very organized and It has lots of resources to choose from.” “This program has given my students a strong number sense with explicit teaching, repetition, online resources, and practice opportunities at home. The program cycles through key learning goals. The children see them over and over again and solidifies their understanding. It also has a strong math vocabulary component that the students use in their daily language and is consistent and carries through to the following school year.” “Very rigorous. Uses nice methods to get the math into the kid's brains. The kids seem to really enjoy solving the math because a lot of them are viewed as puzzles, which makes it more fun. A lot of great resources, especially for struggling students.” “Very in -depth program. It stretches students thinking. I really liked the multiplication and division units for my 3rd graders! All lessons incorporates individual, partner & group work and the Homework & Remembering was a great piece for review and keeping parents in the loop.”

  7. Meet the Teachers!! • Karen Nelson - 4th/5th grade at Eastern Elementary • Erin Jongekrijg - 4th grade at Willow Hill

  8. Teacher Professional Development Plan 1. Full elementary training - August 30th by grade levels 2. 14 coaches to visit sites (3 times per year) 3. Webinars - 90 minutes can be accessed at sites 4. Grade Level Nights - 2 hours with a 2 coaches (2-4 times per year) 5. Ask HMH - 24/7 access to content experts

  9. What do the results look like? 2-sample t -test: t = 3.3329 p -value = 0.0009 df = 2179 The achievement difference is considered to be statistically significant at the 1% level - the difference is NOT due to chance.
