Innovation through participation
What happened?
- Failed to demonstrate “value” to all federations?
Joining isn’t a priority…
- Research Infrastructure Projects
- eduGAIN didn’t have 100% country reach
Research Infrastructures didn’t federate either
- Federation Resource Registries weren’t ready for “opt-in”
- Policy Framework, Profiles & Data Protection
Not as perfect as my daughter

What did we do? What are we doing?
- “Brook’s Service Catalogue” à REFEDS MET
- http://terena.org/~schofield/servicecatalogue/
WARNING! Browser-site database in use! Then (August 2011) 24 entities; Now 94 entities (62 IdPs)
- FIM4RI – Paper and Roadmap
- GÉANT Code of Conduct
- Funding Resource Registry Updates (NZ, FR, IEàPT)
- Building Federation Capacity & “Federation-as-a-Service”
Goal of getting to 100% In progress now – Infrastructure + Policy training
…more in GN3+

eduGAIN Policy Framework…
- Is it a “bridge” or is it a “barrier”?
If it is a barrier… then we need to address an issue. What are your federation requirements?
- Metadata Trust & Provenance
Affects federations differently (Hub&Spoke vs Mesh) Metadata download + incorporation
- Opt-in? Did it really protect anyone?
- Visibility of eduGAIN (not an advertising requirement)

Newsflash! Policy Update Required
- NREN-PC and GN3-Exec want to get out of the “approval”
business
Has already happened for the GN3 eduroam Confederation Same requirement for eduGAIN Policy Framework
- We must update the policy!
- Lets fix “other problems” while we’re at it.
- Declaration + Metadata Profile + Constitution
- Not just policy: Technical Issues also.
