The Importance of Routines

❏ Once a schedule is formed for your school, it is so important to create a routine at home to provide consistency and structure to your child’s day. This is especially true if we move to remote learning. Create a schedule together, so that it works for you and your child. This way they can be held accountable to follow

  • through. Create a visual schedule so that your child can refer back to it. Incorporate breaks if doing remote.

❏ Try to keep wake-up time and breakfast consistent and let your child know clear expectations of the morning

  • routine. If you allow your child electronics or free time, let them know that they need to be dressed and ready

to go beforehand. Set a timer for use of electronics in AM and give a 5 minute warning before it’s turned off. ❏ If your child is doing remote learning or we go to remote learning, find a work space in your home where your child/children can remain focused and free from distractions. ❏ It’s important to remain consistent with drop off & pick up for school. ❏ Keep after school routines as consistent as possible. ❏ Establish a consistent bedtime routine. Try to turn off electronics an hour before bedtime. Sleep is key for all!!

Mood Meter

The Mood Meter is a RULER Anchor and tool that we use to identify our feelings. Many of the children begin their day in school with a “morning meeting” where they check in with the mood meter and label their feeling. When we learn to identify how we feel, we can understand how we can cope with our negative feelings. Remember, ALL FEELINGS ARE OKAY!

Meta-Moment

This visual can be used to help children (and you) regulate during a time of feeling stressed, angry, or worried.

When we take a Meta-Moment, we stop and think before acting. We ask ourselves, how would my “best self” handle this situation? What strategy would my “best self” use?
