An overview of Education in the Division
,
We run a lot of modules!
Structure of UCL’s Education approvals and oversight
We have redrafted roles documents for Programme leads, module organisers and personal tutors and the teaching support that can be expected. These roles documents will be circulated shortly. It has been agreed that “bench fees” for lab projects will be paid earlier in the Academic year than previously. We’ll still ask for people to claim this money though
If there is anything related to education that staff would like to discuss- Please do not hesitate to contact either Stephen Price or Stephen Davies
Thank you!

Staff survey action plan
Main Feedback
- Lack of engagement with Departments and Division /
Faculty and a lack of knowledge of broader Division
- Lack of clarity regarding UCL plans, goals and policies and
‘rumour mill’ about the financial intent at UCL
- Bullying and harassment issues, and a feeling of
disrespect for those perceived as less senior
- Desire for staff to be involved in major decision affecting
them, and to increase management visibility
Staff Survey Action Plan
Main Actions
- Develop and Embed Divisional Identity and Cohesiveness
- Identify issues which assist departmental aims at a Divisional Level.
- Review of committee structure and internal communications.
- Increase awareness of UCL plans, goals and policies
- DD and DM to present regularly at team meetings.
- Develop face-to-face opportunities to disseminate information (within a broader
communications plan).
- Promote respect at all levels
- Zero tolerance for lack of respect / introduction of divisional ombudsmen at various levels.
- Enhanced employee engagement and satisfaction
- Where possible, staff consulted on key decisions in line with UCL policy
- Ensure Divisional applications of UCL policy are structured to the needs of the Division.
Postdoc Activities
Patricia Salinas, Postdoctoral Liaison
Divisional postdoctoral support
- The Division conducted a postdoctoral survey at the end of 2014 to identify areas of
strength and weakness in our support to postdoctoral fellows.
- The survey identified the needs and concerns of the postdoctoral fellows in our
Division.
- Frances Brodsky and I held a meeting with our postdocs where we further identified
- ther areas that the Division could improve support to our postdoctoral fellows to
promote their career.
- Frances Brodsky asked me to act as a Divisional liaison to coordinate activities and
events that help postdocs.
We have appointed a Divisional postdoctoral representative to coordinate the events and activities Divisional postdoctoral representative: Dr Faye McLeod (CDB) f.mcleod@ucl.ac.uk CDB: Anukampa Barth a.barth@ucl.ac.uk NPP: Flavia Mancini f.mancini@ucl.ac.uk GEE: Pascale Gerbault p.gerbault@ucl.ac.uk SMB: Antje Kruger antje.kruger@ucl.ac.uk More information on support for postdoctoral researchers can be found at the following website: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/biosciences/Postdoctoral_Support The Division has approved funding to support a Divisional postdoctoral seminar series. The series
- rganized by the postdoctoral representatives will take place once a month.
The postdoctoral representatives in each Department are organizing a second survey to determine the individual needs of our postdoc per Department. Through the postdoctoral representatives, the postdocs have quickly mobilized to respond to the petition on the impact of Brexit in their careers.
Seminar series on career progression:
June 2016 Professor Maria Fitzgerald gave a seminar entitled: Plough Your Own Furrow - reflections on a career in neuroscience. September 2016 Professor Patricia Salinas will give a seminar entitled: Narrowing the Gender Gap End of 2016 Panel discussion on Career challenges for women in science.
