Importance of Full Fibre Networks

In the UK fixed internet traffic is set to double every two years, whilst mobile data traffic increases at rate of 42% per year.

  • 1 in 5 businesses use cloud services and numbers growing.
  • New business sectors and job opportunities emerging - require

high speed dependable full fibre networks.

  • Future needs – current FTTC networks by themselves will not be

able to satisfy ever increasing data demands and expectations.

  • The business case for further full fibre roll out is challenging in

rural areas without stimulus.

  • Risk of urban /rural split emerging.
  • Further detail in our Digital Rutland Strategy 2019-2022.

Additional Benefits – Mobile and 5G

  • Mobile coverage:

Ofcom Connected Nations stats indicate Rutland has mobile connectivity issues – best indicator is % of area which does not have full Operator coverage: The stats below compare Rutland with neighbouring areas:

  • Provision of Full Fibre routes increases number of aggregation nodes along the route

and prepares for 5G access

  • Further investigation is underway to correlate:
  • 4G mast location data; FF spine routes; poor Mobile coverage
  • Enable extension of FF backhaul
  • additions to coverage is dependent on Mobile Operators but we will work with them

1.Influence:

Encourage your village hall to commit to an upgrade if they haven’t done so already– we need this before contract award as part

  • f

DCMS Gate C assurance.

2.Invest in your Community:

Consider supporting smaller village halls with the monthly broadband

  • charges. This is a direct investment in

the social and economic fabric of your community.

3.Help us promote:

The government’s gigabit voucher scheme to local businesses (and residents as part of a group) : Worth £2500 per SME and £500 per resident.

4.Encourage:

Groups of businesses and residential premises to take up enhanced rural gigabit voucher scheme : Worth £3500 per SME and £1500 per residential

5.Spread the word:

Help us communicate the project and its benefits within parishes as we build out the new networks

6.Give us feedback:

Help us evaluate the project and develop new tools and approaches as it rolls out in your local parish.
