  24. The early settlements Centuries ago people had to use the land, animals and water to survive ● without technology. Different areas had different environments. This meant that people had to ● adapt to their location to survive. In coastal regions they made homes from the wood of trees, fished in the ● ocean for food and used the surrounding land for agriculture. In the plains tribes followed and hunted herds of animals across flat ● plains. They had homes that looked like tents made from animal skin that could easily be moved. In icy regions they fished through the ice for food, used animal skins to ● keep warm, and some built homes from snow. In each environment people had to create a way of living to survive there. ● 24

  25. The early settlements (cont.) The early settlers needed to live near resources, and therefore lived in certain areas of the United States. The first colonies were settled near the ocean where they could trade and fish in the water. The original settlements were split into three groups based on their lifestyle and resources. 25

  26. 26

  27. The early settlements (cont.) While this was an exciting time for our country, there was a difference in culture among the settlers. Different groups of people were coming together from various countries, and they did not always get along. However, because these cultures came together we have diversity in our country. Culture - The way of a life of a group of people. It includes things such as language, sports, clothing, and food Diversity - To have influences from many different cultures 27

  40. What is culture? 40

  41. Where does my culture come from? Your culture is sometimes related to where you live, and what customs are practiced in the community you live in. But most importantly, it comes from your family and where they are from! Most of us in our school were born here in America, but we still have culture from the countries our ancestors came from. 41

  42. All of north America As people were settling, they did not just come to the United States. They also settled in the surrounding areas of North America including Canada and the Caribbean. Some of the first countries to settle in the continent were Spain, France and England. 42

  43. People started moving! As the population grew, people started moving to different regions of the United States. These settlers created communities, and eventually states. Each region of the United States is thought to have it’s own culture, but the diversity of the people in each region challenges it. 43

  44. Assignment: think about it Think about it: (you don’t have to turn in anything) If you could live in any state other than Florida, where would you choose? May do: Watch the video and check out all the awesome state capitals! Challenge yourself and try to sing along! 44
