What is the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund [EGF]

  • It’s a European Union funded initiative which provides funding for those workers who

become redundant through the effects of globalisation.

  • The Department of Education and Skills is responsible for EGF in Ireland
  • SOLAS provides the operational support for EGF programme implementation
  • In 2013, the Commission adopted a new regulation for EGF for the period 2014 – 2020

Significance ?

  • The new regulation permits member states to utilise EGF funding to support young

persons or NEETs (those Not in Employment, Education or Training, between the ages

  • f 18 - 25 years)

EGF NEETs - The Process

  • Company closure announced and decision made by Government to apply for EGF

funding for redundant workers

  • DES in consultation with DSP will insert a funding provision for a cohort of NEETs into

the relevant EGF application

  • NEET clients are the responsibility of the Department of Social Protection [DSP]
  • DSP nominate potential NEET clients for inclusion onto the relevant EGF programme
  • Once identified and approved, activation for that specific cohort transfers to the SOLAS

EGF Coordination Unit

  • Each EGF programme has a two year implementation cycle, which is not extendable
