Deer I sland Thermal/ Power Plant

Thermal Power Plant Main Switchgear Building Station 132 (Eversource Bldg)

• 11:02 am (during 7-13 shift)
• Control board failed at Eversource Station 385 (in South Boston)
• Caused complete power loss at Deer Island
• Plant flow 379 MGD just prior to outage
• Plant energy demand 17.0 MW
• 12.5 MW purchased

What Happened – March 22, 2016

Full Plant Power Outage Recovery V. Historical Performance

Flows returned to pre-event conditions by 12:45pm (1.75 hrs after outage) Eversource Power restored, CTG returned to Standby by 3:25 pm (4 hrs 23 minutes after outage)

• Overall Effect:

– All flows retained in Collection System – No CSOs, SSOs or raw sewage releases – Staff response excellent, minimal downtime – All flows sent to Deer Island received full treatment Post Event Assessment

• CTG 1A failed to start – later ID’d failed fuel pump
• Several control system cards failed - $7,000
• Misc. equipment failures

– Air compressor – pH transmitter – Other minor items – Under $10,000 for repairs (mostly personnel time) Post Event Assessment (cont.)
