VSquad Plus - Supported Volunteering
About VAC
Voluntary Action Coventry is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee. We’re passionate about promoting and enabling voluntary activity in Coventry, working with both individuals and voluntary and community organisations to tackle inequalities and disadvantage in the city. We aim to increase and better support social action and community resilience in Coventry; strengthening communities and improving quality of life.
About VAC
Since 1999 we have run the Volunteer Centre in Coventry, providing information to individuals on volunteering opportunities that they can undertake and helping voluntary and community organisations to recruit volunteers. We work with everyone – because we believe everyone has something to give. But we recognise that not everyone is ready.
The barriers that can affect people accessing employment, such as low self-esteem, isolation, physical and mental health problems and lack of social capital, may also act as barriers to volunteering. Therefore a project which effectively gets people ready for volunteering will be a significant step in getting them ready for employment (Bashir et al 2013).
VSquad Plus Extra help for people that want to volunteer but who need help to overcome barriers
VSquad Plus offers:
- 12 weeks of activity (sessions run Tues & Thurs 2-4pm)
- Taster volunteering sessions, if you aren't sure what role is right
for you we can support you to try a range of opportunities
- One to one support to help you find a volunteering role that
meets your needs and interests
- Help to fill in forms and prepare for interviews
- Accredited and non-accredited training
- On-going support to help you settle in to VSquad Plus and
your volunteering role
- A reference at the end of the project
- ne to one
and group sessions
Our clients
AB has a heroin addiction which she is in recovery
- from. She has recent criminal convictions.
AB says her heroin addiction was a key factor in her getting into trouble with the police. AB has extreme low confidence and finds travelling unaccompanied very difficult and scary in part because of past relationships.
GH has physical health problems as he has arthritis which affects his mobility. GH also has schizophrenia. GH is currently living in supported accommodation for people who are homeless. GH has previous criminal convictions but these are from a very long time ago.
KL has hearing difficulties, which means she needs people to speak to her face to face and not from behind. KL disclosed at the start of the project that she doesn’t have much confidence in her speech and therefore has a tendency to mumble which makes her feel less confident. KL also has difficulties with writing and spelling.
Changing and developing
A key aim for AB was to keep doing well and staying clean. It was important for her to develop the confidence to go out unassisted. AB identified a keen interest for caring and crafts and these are the areas in which she would like to volunteer
Changing and developing
GH has improved communication skills, including increased eye contact. GH has been clear about identifying his goals:
- To volunteer/work in charity shop
- To interact more with people
- To improve his mental health and remain positive
- To be more mobile
Changing and developing
KL is growing in confidence, improving her communication skills when working in groups and in
- ne to one situations.
She has attended every group session and has attended multiple one to one sessions. KL is always on time, polite and friendly to all the
- ther Vsquad Plus participants.
Positive outcomes
AB was able to have someone other than her usual support worker collect her from her home to attend a group session AB identified that she would like to volunteer with Bethany’s Wish Deciding to share her personal circumstances with the group as a way to further increase her confidence in learning to trust/have faith in others
Positive outcomes
- GH opened a personal email account for the first
time
- Created an online volunteer connect profile
- Mobility scooter arranged to help GH be more
mobile and independent
- Volunteering opportunity at a charity shop
Positive outcomes
KL began volunteering at her local PDSA shop every Monday for two hours and is looking at a second role at Albany Theatre. KL will be joining an Adult Education English class on Friday mornings. KL also had a job interview at Morrison’s supermarket.
Working in partnership
Accelerate will allow greater support to be targeted at individuals in the right way and at the right time. Referrals that are not just ‘here’s a leaflet’ or ‘I’ll make you an appointment’ but genuinely involve the client and are driven by what they need.

HOMELESS PEOPLE
Fact or Fiction Homeless people are 3.5 times more likely to suffer from mental ill-health than the general population Correct ……..…but they are 10 times more likely to commit suicide
How do we help?
Our aim is to ensure that people become as independent as possible, realise their potential and contribute to society rather than being a drain on scarce resources On average people stay in our accommodation services about six months during which time they will participate in a range of structured and informal learning and engagement. 177 people left our accommodation in the year to 31 Mar 2016. Aside from accommodation, 92% of those people reported at least one positive improvement in their life and on average each
- f those reported improvements in 4.1 different areas.
Job Prospects
- 15% believed their job prospects had improved even
though they were out of work at the time they left
- 25% had received vocational training or entered
formal education whilst with us
- Over 36% were in paid employment when they left us
‘Refreshed’ began as an idea whereby counterfeit clothes which were seized by Trading Standards and destined for landfill sites could be donated to us and used by homeless people The early challenge was that we could not legally distribute clothes which bore a counterfeit logo We approached Coventry University Fashion Department to see if they could help with ‘de-branding’. They did better, they set first year students the task of turning the clothes into something different. T-shirts became dresses and coats became handbags and the clothing was sold in our own shop. Refreshed was born.
So why are we part of Accelerate?
- Our beneficiaries need a helping hand
- Square pegs don’t fit round holes
- Everyone has something to offer
- We have something that works but …………..
- We don’t have all the answers
