Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) is a modular data collection
mechanism that provides regular updated data from a wide geographic area
There is some good information regarding areas of origin, transit, profiles,
trends and movements, within different regions and from those into Europe
Current inflows to Europe through the CMR originate mainly from Africa,
but African migrants to Europe are a small share of the population moving between African countries
Mobility to Europe also requires analysis of displacement in countries of
- rigin, and multilayered, complex data analysis
Activities to collect and analyze primary data in many contexts allows for cross country comparison and better understanding of trends over time
DTM (Displacement Tracking Matrix): A modular data collection mechanism
Methodological framework to capture and monitor displacement and population movements. To provide useful and relevant data to the humanitarian and development communities
DTM OPERATIONS AND KEY DTM FIGURES
Currently 40 Countries with data collection at location level; Over 2,400 data collection staff; Network of over 68,000 active participants; Around 120 professional and specialized staff; More than 60 countries covered since 2014; Global (Geneva) and Regional (Vienna, Cairo, Nairobi, Dakar, Bangkok) coordination structures
Location, Population, Flows and Vulnerabilities
DTM DATA
- Geared to the needs of front-line field staff
and agencies/organizations
- Integrated GBV (and current work in Child
Protection) risk indicators into DTM data collection tools and enhanced understanding of how related information could be analyzed, shared with specialized agencies, and trigger response.
- Developed standard operating procedures
for sharing DTM data with relevant actors, in phases of high mobility
- Training to DTM enumerators, national
authorities and DTM staff to better respond to critical protection concerns
- Joint work with humanitarian actors for
responsible use of data

DTM FLOW MONITORING - MEDITERRANEAN
DTM Flow Monitoring System in the Mediterranean aims to collect and regularly update information on migrants and asylum-seekers arriving in Europe, in
- rder to provide an accurate, regularly
updated and timely overview of trends and flows. Specifically, DTM:
✓ Identifies, maps and monitors relevant
locations along routes
✓ Maps routes and reports of trafficking,
exploitation and abuse
✓ When possible collects information on
nationality, sex, age and vulnerabilities
✓ Identifies general migration trends

IOM MONITORS FLOWS OF MIGRANTS WITHIN A COUNTRY, INTRA-REGIONALLY IN WEST AND CENTRAL AFRICA AND OUTSIDE AFRICA ALONG THE CENTRAL MEDITERRANEAN ROUTE IOM has established Flow Monitoring Points (FMPS) as part of its Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) in areas of significant migratory transit in West and Central Africa, Libya, Spain and Italy. Two tools are used at different locations:
- 1. The Flow Monitoring Registry (FMR)
collects data at the group level in order to provide a better understanding of intra and inter-regional migration patterns and trends;
- 2. The
Flow Monitoring Survey (FMS) collects individual data on a sample of migrants on their journey. Both tools are implemented in various locations and findings are cross-checked with those of
- ther countries.

IOM Niger has flow monitoring activities in two locations (Arlit and Dirkou) Since February 2016.
- Flow monitoring supports protection and assistance activities for migrants
stopped at borders, returned from Algeria and Libya, stranded in the desert.
- The majority of flows are taking place within Niger with individuals
traveling within the country.
- Outflows towards Libya and Algeria are increasingly difficult due to
strengthened border controls: riskier routes and search & rescue mission
