  3. Philosophy  Teach and learn with an open mind. To prepare students for the “next level.” To focus on our emotional intelligence (thoughts, emotions, actions)  First and foremost, my job is getting the student to want to come to school to learn. The rest will fall in place.  An effort in all areas must be given in order to succeed. Perseverance and problem solving are a must.  The student needs three things to succeed; Effort (perseverance), teacher support, parent support.

  6. School Policies Birthdays- Please mail all birthday invitations (don’t send them to school). This helps avoid hurt feelings! No cupcakes, or treats please (District Policy).  Class Parties- $20 donation (excluding the end of the year 5 th Grade Party)  Fall  Winter  Friendship  End of the Year (Class Party)

  7. School Policies continued… Car pick up For the safety of your child and all of the students in the gated area, please stay in your car to pick up your children if they are in the gated area. If you park your car, please meet your child under the ramada or in an agreed upon location. Tardy Students If your child arrives to school when the tardy bell rings or after 7:45, an adult will need to park their car and walk their child into the office in order to sign them in. This is a state law new for the 2018-2019 school year. We are audited each year on our school procedures and we need your help with this. Thank you!

  8. Transportation  Changes in Transportation or absences-  Please send a note/email to let me know of any changes in transportation or if your child will be absent from school. You must also contact the office or the attendance line!  Any changes regarding bus transportation and bus passes must be cleared through the district office. Please call them at (480) 541-1700

  12. Core knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) A comprehensive program for teaching skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. CKLA also builds students’ knowledge and vocabulary in literature, history, geography, and science. This resource provides • High level reading, inferencing skills, use of graphic organizers • Workbook activities and homework • An emphasis on speaking and listening skills

  14. Balanced Literacy • Book Clubs – In small groups, students will read and listen to a novel. They will participate in activities relating to this book. These will be done during reading stations. • Reading Stations- Students will work cooperatively in small reading groups to explore 4 different reading stations each week. • IFG (Instructional Focus Group)- Students will work in small groups focusing on concepts, strategies, and topics geared toward that particular group.

This opportunity is a general education initiative; the advanced math course is taught by classroom teachers with specialized training in mathematics content and strategies for meeting the needs of gifted and advanced learners. These classes occur during the math block for a grade level.” Kyrene Elementary School District Gifted Services

Mathematics Pathway Outcomes We want to place students in an appropriate course to ensure all students are adequately challenged, as well as understand and master all content without missing or skipping any concepts. These new pathways allow more high-achieving students the opportunity to complete Algebra I by the end of middle school.

Student Identification Individual Student Data: Knowledge of Students’ Abilities:  Interim Assessments  Report Card Indicators-  Classroom Teacher Mathematics  Gifted Resource  AzMERIT data Teacher  CogAt assessment  Site Leadership scores  Parent Recommendations All of these pieces of information are taken into consideration when placing students into an advanced math course. These groups are flexible and subject to change throughout the school year.

Technology • Students are lucky to have access to 8 Lenovo tablets, 2 wireless laptop computers and 1 desktop, as well as a projection system, Smart Board and a document camera for a variety of educational experiences. They will also have access to thirty computers in the computer lab on a weekly basis. • Students will use this technology to integrate all the curricular areas through various projects, reports, and slide shows. • We will use Google Classrooms to complete many of their classroom and/or homework assignments • Technology Indicators on the Report Card include: • Technology Operations and Concepts • Effective/Ethical Use of Technology

Expecta tati tions: ons:  Nightly math- 50% Student + 50% Parent = 100% your decision  Practice Math Facts-build fluency  Reading and/or writing (usually 3x a week) Not optional…  At times, social studies or science  Weekly Friday newsletter should be read, signed, and returned.  Homework should be neat, legible and complete  Consequences and Opportunites:  Parents are contacted if homework is not consistently turned in and/or there are other academic concerns.  Homework-opoly and Random Pay Days!
