  7. How Many Structures? Eng / Scot / Wales RPL 710 Sustrans 430 Total 1140 • These include viaducts, tunnels, bridges, culverts, abutments and retaining walls • Some have walking and cycling paths, some don’t

  8. Overview In general our structures date from the period of the expansion of the railways (100 to 150 years old) Mostly • Brick and masonry arch • WI and steel beam Some • RC decks (replacements) • Timber footbridges None • Suspension bridges • Cantilever bridges

  14. Structures – Managing decline Underbridge Overbridge Our fortunate position – our underbridges generally have large reserves of strength. We manage the decline of underbridges and concentrate resources on overbridges that carry the public highway.
