Understand the current situation of BSC fisheries in Kep Province

slide-5

  • Conduct socio-economic and market surveys
  • Baseline survey, comprising socio-economic and market survey was conducted to examine the real

situation of the BSC fisheries in Kep Province.

  • Information on the BSC fishery was collected and the current situation was understood.
  • Assessment of fishery management and future measures.
  • A survey was conducted to clarify the current state of actual fishing activities of BSC in Kep by

assessing fishery management using the Fish MAT (Fishery Management Assessment) method.

Collect catch data and evaluate the stock of BSC resources

slide-9
SLIDE 9
  • The project collected the catch data of BSC resources and analyzed catch trends and stock status of

BSC resources 【Result of analysis】

  • The BSC stock in Kep Province is not currently overfished.
  • If fishers would continue to catch small-sized crabs as they are currently doing, the BSC resources in Kep Province

could be reduced.

  • In order to ensure the sustainable utilization of BSC resources in Kep Province fishing pressure must not be increased, in

which case it would be effective if fishers were to release under-sized crabs caught and catch only large-size crabs.

Enhance the conservation of BSC resources by complying with fishing regulations

slide-12
SLIDE 12
  • Compliance with catch restrictions on crab size
  • Install signboards indicating restrictions for catching certain crab size.
  • Strengthening the regulations on fishing operations in the conservation area
  • Install buoys in the conservation area(no-fishing operation area)

Implement measures to increase BSC resources

slide-16
SLIDE 16
  • Introduction of hatching and stocking system
  • The first feature of the crab banks system under this project is that gravid female BSC crabs had been

provided free of charge by the fishers who caught them.

  • The second feature is that a system has been established wherein the fishers themselves manage the

hatching facilities free of charge.

Recommendation

slide-20
SLIDE 20
  • Implementation of 1-4 approaches was effective for strengthening the management of fishery

resources of small–scall fisheries.

slide-21
SLIDE 21

→ Socio economic survey etc.

→ Evaluation of the resources stock →Installation buoys, signboard etc →Crab bank system (hatching and stocking system)

slide-22
SLIDE 22
  • The voluntary efforts by fishers themselves to manage fishery resources are very crucial in conservation

and sustainable utilization of the resources.

  • The fishers were themselves cooperated and participated actively in the active in the project.

This is, above all, the main factor that has led to achieving significant results in the activities of the project.
