When we Need to Get Outside the Statistical Box Wednesday, 4:00 to 5:00 pm Danny Ennis, The Institute for Perception

In the history of Sensory Science, statistical models have played a pivotal role in data interpretation and rational decision-making. When the field began to take shape there were numerous methodologies for collecting data and statisticians helped considerably by providing a basis for data analyses. However, there have been times during our development when ideas for new models cannot be considered to have origins in statistical thinking and have played an important role in advancing our field. Some examples will be given to illustrate this conclusion using developments in scaling results from difference tests and category scales, interpretations

  • f "no preference/difference" outcomes, the widespread use and limitations of the proportion of

discriminators, and optimization using regression-based methods.
