Committee: Date: Community and Children’s Services 10 January 2014 Subject: Public Presentation to Committee by Fusion Lifestyle – Management of the Golden Lane Leisure Centre and ports Development in the City of London Report of: For Information Director of Community and Children’s Services Summary This report, which is for information, provides an overview of the services delivered by Fusion Lifestyle, an experienced sports and leisure organisation responsible for managing the Golden Lane Leisure Centre and providing sports development services in the City of London. Fusion Lifestyle will be presenting to Committee in January 2014 to update Members on the progress to date and the next steps for development of the service. Recommendation(s) That Fusion Lifestyle ’s presentation to update the Committee on progress is received by Members. Main Report Background 1. Following a tender process in 2011, Fusion Lifestyle was awarded the contract for the management of the Golden Lane Leisure Centre and provision of a sports development service in the City of London. The provider commenced service delivery in January 2012. 2. Following the transition of public health responsibilities to the City of London, Fusion Lifestyle was subsequently appointed to deliver the City of London’s Exercise on Referral Scheme from January 2013. 3. This report provides a summary of the services provided by Fusion Lifestyle in advance of their presentation to Committee in January 2014 to provide Members will an update on progress to date. Members last received a presentation by Fusion Lifestyle on 8 November 2012. Management of the Golden Lane Leisure Centre 4. Fusion Lifestyle is responsible for the management of the Golden Lane Leisure Centre in the heart of the Golden Lane Estate. This includes provision of a state-of-the-art gym, studio, swimming pool, sports hall and tennis courts. The Centre provides a variety of energetic and relaxing activities, sessions and courses for people of all ages and abilities.

Fusion Lifestyle organises a range of exciting, innovative programmes at the Centre to encourage use by all sections of the local community, including residents and workers, to encourage people to try new sporting activities and to exercise more. Sports development service 6. As part of its contract, Fusion Lifestyle is responsible for provision of an inclusive and accessible sports development programme across the City to enhance health, vitality and wellbeing. Programmes include children’s activities such as the Mini Marathon, the 7. London Youth Games, youth sports projects, swim schools and various competitions. 8. Adult projects include the City of Sport programme delivering pay-as-you-go sports and activities at low cost throughout the Square Mile, and older people's programmes such as the well-established Young at Heart programme, a specific programme designed for those aged 50 and over. Exercise on Referral Scheme The City of London’s Exercise on Referral Scheme offers health professionals 9. the opportunity to refer patients to an individually tailored exercise programme, with healthy living and nutrition advice. 10. The process begins with a welcome appointment and induction to the facilities, whereby one of the scheme’s qualified Exercise on Referral instructors will discuss the programme and design the individual’s 12 -week activity plan. Instructors will also offer support and guidance throughout the scheme, including information on nutrition and leading a healthy lifestyle. 11. There are various exit routes from the programme, including:  the Young at Heart programme  the City of Sport programme, a pay-as-you-go activity programme designed for inactive individuals. 12. Key aims of the service are:  to offer effective exercise for participants with medical conditions  to empower and motivate participants to make informed choices to improve their physical, mental and social wellbeing through physical activity  to empower participants to make positive changes to their lifestyle and create a long-term change in exercise behaviour. Work with partners 13. Fusion Lifestyle works closely with partners in the City of London to deliver high-quality and innovative services for residents and workers in the City of London, including short exercise sessions at lunchtime and after work

  3. targeted at City workers, work with Spice to promote the use of Time Credits, and work with schools and youth organisations to encourage children and young people to participate in sporting activities. Corporate and strategic implications 14. There are no financial, legal or strategic implications associated with this report. Conclusion 15. That Members receive the presentation by Fusion Lifestyle to update the Committee on progress in delivering the aforementioned services in the City of London.
