How Does it Fit In to the College Process?

Naviance helps students plan for and achieve post-secondary goals

In Naviance students can:

  • Create a career interest profile
  • Build a resume
  • Research and compare colleges to form a college list
  • View virtual tours of colleges
  • View scattergrams to determine whether or not a college is a good fit

based on IHS data of GPA’s and test scores from the past 5 years

  • Track college applications and status of transcript requests
slide-6
SLIDE 6

Additional Naviance Information

■ Teachers upload their letters of recommendation

into Naviance, students can view status of their requests

■ Naviance allows for the secure and timely

transmission of supplemental materials to colleges

■ Allows counselors and parents to track student

College Testing

The SAT and ACT are entrance exams used by most colleges and universities to make admissions decisions.

The idea (in theory, at least) is to provide colleges with one common criterion that can be used to compare all applicants.

This is just one factor in the admissions decision. Schools also consider:

High school GPA

Academic transcript

Letters of recommendation

Extracurricular activities

Interviews

and personal essays The weight placed on these scores varies from school to school.

Applying to Colleges

■ 3 Main ways of submitting an application

Common Application Coalition Directly to the College IHS prefers submission through Common App as it most closely aligns with our Naviance System If you have the option, apply Common App!

slide-29
SLIDE 29

C

* Common Application “resets” each year on August 1st, but students can create their account at any time and begin working *Students should have their college essay ready (complete and proofread) for upload into the Common Application

The Common Application

What is it?

The Common Application (informally known as the Common App) is an undergraduate college admission application that applicants may use to apply to any of nearly 700 member colleges and universities in 48 states and the District of Columbia, as well as in Canada, China, and many European countries

slide-30
SLIDE 30

The Coalition for College

What is it? The Coalition is a diverse group of more than 150 distinguished colleges and universities that is committed to making college a reality for all high school students

The Coalition App covers many top college and universities, but not as many schools as the Common App covers. Only 132 schools are Coalition members, as opposed to the almost 800 schools that are covered by the Common App. All eight of the Ivy League colleges are included in this application. Other prominent universities, including Stanford University, the University of Chicago, Duke University, and Johns Hopkins University, are also included in the Coalition Application, and more schools join the Coalition each year

slide-31
SLIDE 31

Most of the schools included in the Coalition App are also included in the Common App. So, what are the benefits of choosing one application over the

  • ther?

If you think that completing one application will be difficult enough and you crave the simplicity of only having to go through the process ones, then the Common App may be the best application for you. Because the Common App covers so many schools, chances are the schools you are applying to will be on this application. Enter all of your basic info

  • nce and write just one personal statement, and you’re well on your way to applying to

each school on your list. Remember that most schools accept at least one of these applications, but not all of them! If you plan to apply to any University of California schools or to certain small private schools, you will not be able to use the Common App or Coalition App. Always be sure to check with the schools themselves to make sure you are filling out their application correctly.

slide-32
SLIDE 32

Process for Applying to a College

■ Complete the Common Application online ■ Complete Non-Common Application school

applications on individual school websites or Coalition

■ Once submitted, request standardized test scores

from SAT and ACT

■ Request transcripts via IHS Transcript Request

Form following deadlines for request (generally 2 weeks prior to college deadline)

slide-33
SLIDE 33

Early Decision, Early Action, Regular Decision, Rolling Decision?

EARLY DECISION:

  • Apply early and get a decision early
  • BINDING… you must attend this college if admitted regardless of finances
  • Must withdraw other applications if accepted

EARLY ACTION:

  • Apply early and get a decision early
  • Not binding

REGULAR DECISION:

  • Flexible Non-Binding Process
  • Allows More Time for Decision Making

ROLLING DECISION:

  • Large time frame to apply
  • Accepts applications as long as space is available
