Newsela App - Differentiated instruction for reading comprehension

Newsela extracts articles from major news outlets and rewrites each article at different levels for

  • readers. Students can choose a text at a level that would be readable for them as well as provide

them an appropriate level of academic challenge . Teachers can assist students on which levels students should read according to their proficiency and challenge them to move up to the next level when they are ready.

Annotation Tools

Newsela allows readers to annotate, highlight in different colours and save the articles. Specific reading tasks like identifying topic sentences and main ideas, and details in paragraphs can be easily done using this feature, which increases student engagement.

Artful Storytelling

Students worked in pairs to write a story. They then used the online platform Storybird to create their own digital picture book by selecting relevant pictures which best describe their stories!

Potential Development Programme

Future Problem-Solving Programme (FPSP)

FPSP trains students’ critical thinking skills and tests their creativity. Students use problem-solving strategies to explore challenges and propose action plans for community and global issues. In 2018, Teffania Clarissa Anabel of 3 Everest received 2nd placing in scenario writing. In 2019, Nevan Lim Zhen Yu of 3 Euler came in 6th placing.

Potential Development: Scenario Writing

An Excerpt from our FPSP Scenario Writing Finalist "I'm telling you, I saw someone there," Maxwell

  • insisted. "Captain, no one was in the greenhouse

last night, it was probably just a nightmare," Zinoviev replied. "I know what I saw! I swear someone was there..." Maxwell asserted but to no avail. "Alright, let's say it was real, who could it have been?" Hudson said calmly, trying to de- escalate the situation. "I don't know... a stowaway perhaps, like on the Orion a couple of years ago". "That's impossible, we've been on this ship for four months if there was a stowaway here, we would have caught them by now", Zinoviev argued. In a burst of exasperation, Maxwell decided to drop the subject.
