SuRF Italy: the Mission • Constitute a permanent venue for discussion, at national level, between the stakeholders involved in the management and remediation of contaminated sites, to define and apply shared procedures and sustainability approaches. Sustainability applied to remediation (the italian way): “a process for management and remediation of a contaminated site, aimed at identifying the best solution, that maximizes the benefits of its implementation when considering environmental, social and economic factors, through a balanced decision process, agreed to by stakeholders” 3 4th International Conference on Sustainable Remediation – Montreal (Canada) – April 27-28, 2016
SuRF Italy: the Objectives • To move gradually from the current concept of “remediation” to that of “ sustainable remediation ”, through the positive experiences gained in Italy. • To support projects through evaluations of their environmental, social and economic sustainability , considering the priorities of the stakeholders . • To share and support the remediation sector’s regulatory evolution . • To improve the sector’s culture, helping members focus their effort. • To integrate with European and international examples and create a virtuous cycle for the exchange of information about best management practices (BMPs) and the results achieved. 4 4th International Conference on Sustainable Remediation – Montreal (Canada) – April 27-28, 2016

Activities and Initiatives – Technical Documentation • Support in the development/revision of ISO/TC 190 ISO/NP 18504 standard , “Soil quality: Guidance on sustainable remediation” (Project Leader: Paul Nathanail, University of Nottingham. Alessandro Nardella, eni, appointed as expert by UNI) • Development of “White Paper on Sustainable Remediation” [2013-2015]. • Development of technical manual “ Criteri Operativi per la Bonifica Sostenibile ” (“Operating Criteria for Sustainable Remediation”) [ongoing]. 6 4th International Conference on Sustainable Remediation – Montreal (Canada) – April 27-28, 2016
“White Paper on Sustainable Remediation” • Development of White Paper on Sustainable Remediation [2013-2015]: – Over 1-year effort, by several authors. – Endorsed by multiple organizations ( stakeholders ). – Depicts strengths and areas of improvements in Italy. – Provides transparency to the concrete efforts toward Sustainable Remediation. – Lays the foundation for next steps. – Sets importance of case studies. – First version in 2014; latest release dated October 2015 available online (www.reconnet.net and www.surfitaly.it). 7 4th International Conference on Sustainable Remediation – Montreal (Canada) – April 27-28, 2016
“White Paper” / Focus on Stakeholders Involvement • First step toward connecting main stakeholders, having them sitting them around a symbolic table in a collaborative (and not conflicting) manner to achieve clarity and promote common practices for sustainable remediation. • Emphasis on the description and means of stakeholders involvement, providing recommendations for their roles and responsibilities within the decision-making process. • Stakeholders participation to be integrated within the remediation project development, leaving the final responsibility to authorities in charge of the proceedings. 8 4th International Conference on Sustainable Remediation – Montreal (Canada) – April 27-28, 2016

Operating Manual for Sustainable Remediation • Development of technical manual “ Criteri Operativi per la Bonifica Sostenibile ” (Operating Criteria for Sustainable Remediation) [ongoing] – Aimed at providing practical guidelines and BMPs to easily integrate ( voluntarily ) sustainability principles into the remediation and restoration project life-cycle. – Provide elements useful to: • Define the general objectives; • Identify potential remediation/restoration alternatives, allowing for reaching the general objectives and for a better overall management of territory and resources; • Accompany remediation/restoration proceeding with the evaluation of the effectiveness of approaches and technologies. – Provide the applicable BMPs and the means of interaction with the stakeholders for any described phase. 11 4th International Conference on Sustainable Remediation – Montreal (Canada) – April 27-28, 2016

SuRF Italy Members / Recruiting! • Seeking to involve new organizations , mainly representative of: Industry (small, medium and large): • Experiences and case studies of different size and complexity. • Diverse remediation project types - more technical support and BMP examples needed. • Various business sectors and remediation drivers (Industry, Manufacturing, Real Estate).
