Cineplaza

The design for the building works around the concept of a central plaza, which acts as a social hub for staff, students and community, stengthening the conncection between the building and the urban environment. The buidlings are arranged in a cam- pus like typology with streets conecting different areas. As well as being used for circuclation, the streets are designed for fjlming, inspired by the Tobacco Warehouse.

The Plaza Film Streets

Activities such as outdoor exhibitions and fjlming will take place in the Plaza. The buildings are arranged to maximise natural light, views. The chamfering and colonades are designed to direct people towards the plaza and create a sense of transpar-

  • ency. Corrugated timber is used as a sustainable alternative to aluminium, already present at the site. Red brick is also used

for the fmoor to resemeble both the brick from Tobacco Warehouse and fjlm streets.

Structural Strategy

The same structual principles are repeated throughout the diffenent build-

  • ings. Each building is loosley based on a grid and is made up of a glulam post

and beam frame and load bearing CLT panels.

Site Analysis

Climate

Observations: The site is ex- posed to direct solar gains throughout the day

Views

Observations: Views towards canal are of interest as other sig- nifacant buildings can be seen as well as providing a connection with nature

Access

Observations: Current Footpath running along side of the site

Noise

Observations: Unplesant noise from adjacent roads

Massing

Massing 1 : Buildings categorised into main functions and arranged around the Plaza. Shamfers in the buildings help to guide views towards the plaza and the canal Massing 2 : Simplifjed and ordered. The rigid lay out offers little transparancy and connection between the users building and landscape. Massing 3: Loosen and reshaped. The misalignment of the buildings reveals different elements to the user Massing 4: Chamfered and reshaped. Encorparating different chamfers into the building allows the user to move easily around the site as well as creating a community in the centre. The colonnades add transparency and loosens the rigid feel around the site, creating a blur between inside and out. The interior is arranged around the centre to enable users to spill out into the streets and plaza, strengthening the connection to the urban realm.
