HI MSS Chapter Advocacy Roundtable The CAR supports better health through information and technology by informing, empowering and mobilizing HIMSS Chapters to take advocacy action at the state and local level. Strategic Aims: – Connect national, state and local health IT efforts through active engagement of state & local officials – Support a learning health IT policy community through monthly calls and networking and educational opportunities including webinars and conferences – Leverage opportunities to further health IT policy objectives by identifying one or more chapter advocates from each chapter

The I m portance of Value- based Advocacy? • Addresses policy directions and state advocacy work that reflects HIMSS’s organizational values and principles and…  Provides a process of consensus on broader concepts (shared values and principles) that builds to agreement on specific advocacy issues within the value-based health ecosystem  Provides steps along the way that can be approved by larger audiences (chapter board, broader membership) to ensure organizational support for advocacy work  Supports strong coalitions and engages a wider audience (non- health sector) that share values and principles.

  26. Advocacy Day Opportunities • Build relationships with legislators and their staff • Educate the community on how your Chapter is a resource throughout the year • Increase chapter & member interest and investment in advocacy • …and of course, help pass legislation!

  27. Advocacy Day Tips • Start the day with presentations and training related to the bills of interest – can be in or nearby Capitol • Break off into groups to attend meetings in Capitol – Each groups should include a mix of beginner and experienced advocates – Each group should be from the same or nearby districts, so they can each meet with their legislators! This matters! • Instruct each group to complete a summary report after each meeting so the group or you can follow up on the meeting

  28. Rem em ber… • Advocacy Days are a part of the Advocacy Year ! It’s in your best interest to maintain that momentum from Advocacy Day to the rest of the year. • Both introverts and extroverts can advocate! Introverts…take advantage of your focus, listening skills, and interest in small group meetings. We all play a part! • There is more you can do besides the Advocacy Day – Invite officials to chapter events – Host a panel of officials – Meet with your State Health IT Coordinator to review the state strategic plan – Post on social media and tag relevant partners and offiicals Review HIMSS’s Advocacy Day Toolkit on http://clra.himsschapter.org/CAR

Pitching Role Play Work with your table to pitch legislator, governors’ office, or your State Health IT Coordinator. 30 min to prepare with your table, followed by pitching to staff in front Consider: Include:  Who is my audience?  Opening: Introductions on yourselves and HIMSS  Why should they care?  Asks and rationale with  How can HIMSS support this supporting data and stories stakeholder?  Closing and action steps  What pushbacks might they have?
