Pigeon Flocks Let the Best Bird Lead

9

  • Used tiny global positioning system

(GPS) backpacks to study the pigeons

slide-10
SLIDE 10
  • Pigeons have hierarchies, but there is no dictatorship.
  • For each flight, pigeons have one leader, but they used different leaders for

different flight excursions.

  • Pigeons have flexible leadership; the leader role for every pigeon varies
  • ver time.
  • Dominance is not set in stone.
  • They all have a say in decision-making; Every pigeon has influence and

contributes, but level of influence is based on hierarchy (skills & abilities).

  • Pigeons know each other’s strengths & use these to determine the best

leader for the situation.

  • Who is the smartest? Who is the best navigator? Who is the fastest?
  • The fastest pigeon will follow a slower pigeon who knows the best way home.

Findings on Pigeon Leadership: Flexibility is Key

10

slide-11
SLIDE 11

So, like the pigeons, our leaders…..

  • Set direction – turn vision into action, pin-point focus on the

future.

  • Demonstrate personal character – live the values, role model &

lead by example.

  • Mobilize individual commitment – engage others, share

leadership & influence.

  • Engender organizational capability – develop individuals,

build teams, manage change, leverage diversity.

Our Values

18

slide-19
SLIDE 19
  • As a Leader, you must live the Values, be a role model to
  • thers for the Values, and lead our College in alignment with

the Values.

  • The Values are THE Leadership Foundation at our College.

Every decision you make, every commitment you make, every message you send will reflect the Values.

  • It doesn’t matter what results you achieve or what

contributions you make to the College. If the Values are not at the foundation of your actions as a leader at San Jacinto College, leadership success will elude you.

Our College Values are the Bottom Line for Leadership Success

19

slide-20
SLIDE 20

A values-based leader:

  • Creates trust through positive, yet honest communication; explains why things are happening

and the reasons for decisions; communicates difficult messages with a can-do intent.

  • Sets the standard for excellence by setting and communicating clear expectations.
  • Takes ownership for personal decisions and supports the decisions of other leaders through

words and actions; differences regarding decisions are discussed privately among leaders.

  • Leads the way for change and innovation; makes employees feel safe in the face of change.
  • Cares about employees by providing opportunities for learning & development, providing

honest feedback, and ensuring equity and inclusion

  • Creates processes that make it easier for students to succeed even if the change is difficult for

the employees.

  • Acts fairly and responsibly to all employees, in all work groups, in all situations.
  • Makes it OK for employees to ask for help; works with other leaders for the benefit of One

College.

How Does Values Based Leadership Look?

20

slide-21
SLIDE 21

Dance like the world is watching; employees take their cue from what you do and say.

  • You work on the top priorities regardless of how much fun it is.
  • Being an effective implementer of decisions made by the Board or SLT is

not enough; verbalizing your support and confidence in the success of the decision is required.

  • You admit when you are wrong.
  • You are respectful, positive, and demonstrate an upbeat and can-do attitude.
  • You are always an “adult” in every situation. Role models do not get

emotional or disruptive in challenging situations.

On Being a Role Model

21

slide-22
SLIDE 22
  • Speak to the Values everyday with employees:
  • When making decisions
  • In recognizing results and achievements
  • In giving performance feedback
  • When creating or implementing new processes
  • When communicating why you are taking a course of action
  • To explain why changes are occurring

So, How Do I Become a Values Based Leader?

22

slide-23
SLIDE 23
  • When making a decision and you find yourself asking…
  • Which decision should I make?
  • How do the team and I make this decision?
  • This committee/council is divided on what to do. How do we decide?
  • Regroup… Ask yourself and/or team members:
  • Does this decision reflect our Values?
  • How does this decision reflect our Values?
  • Are we living the Values in making this decision?
  • If you and the team can’t answer these questions in the

positive, then it’s a bad decision.

So, How Do I Become a Values Based Leader?

23

slide-24
SLIDE 24
  • Employees need to hear their leaders ask values based

questions.

  • It builds trust and credibility in you as a leader.
  • It integrates our Values into the foundation of our One

College culture.

Key Point: The Values are always our Guiding Principles for everything we do and say.

So, How Do I Become a Values Based Leader?

24

slide-25
SLIDE 25
  • What are some situations in which it is easy for
  • ur values to become compromised?
  • What are some situations in which the

commitment to our values is unclear?

Reclaiming the American Dream

27

slide-28
SLIDE 28

In a rapidly changing America and a drastically reshaped world, the ground beneath the nation’s feet has shifted so dramatically that community colleges need to reimagine their roles and the ways they do their work.

  • - Reclaiming the American Dream,

Executive Summary, Page vii

28

slide-29
SLIDE 29
  • Over the past 3 years, I have been continually introducing

external factors termed as “The New Normal” which are coming to bear on us – San Jacinto College.

  • The world is a complicated place and getting more

complicated.

  • We are in the “coming of age” for education.
  • This requires all in higher education to embrace change and

find ways to adapt to continuing uncertainty.

  • There is a sense of urgency throughout the country.

The Change is Happening Now

29

slide-30
SLIDE 30
  • A focus on state & federal accountability measures.
  • The need to create greater efficiencies and get greater

results.

  • The need to reduce/re-align structure of leadership to

improve speed, flexibility, communications, accountability, and decision making.

  • Creating an organization that increases student

performance and completion.

  • Change due to reduction of public funding.

The “New Normal” Includes….

30

slide-31
SLIDE 31

Obviously money matters, but what matters just as much is how institutions use dollars they have. Community colleges are now forced to confront hard choices.

People and Organization requires a structure that:

  • Supports/increases student performance
  • Functions as One College
  • Lives the College Values
  • Creates greater efficiencies and gets results by re-align

structure of leadership

  • Creates accountability for decision making
  • Creates speed, agility, and flexibility around decision

making, communications

  • Wisely uses available funds to drive staffing
  • Identifies, develops and utilizes talent in ways that benefit

the College’s strategic plan and objectives

What Must Be Our Focus?

We must focus on three key areas.

slide-33
SLIDE 33
  • It requires new leadership skills and courage to lead in the “New

Normal.”

  • As leaders, you have to develop the response capability required to

address these external factors.

  • As an institution, our employees generally have not felt a sense of

urgency to respond to the “New Normal.”

  • It takes strong leaders to maintain employee morale and create

strategies for change during times of intense scrutiny.

Going Forward as a Leader in the “New Normal”

33

slide-34
SLIDE 34

Change cannot be achieved without committed and courageous leaders. While many things need to happen to accomplish institutional transformation, none of them will happen without leadership….Community colleges have been developing leaders to maintain the inherited design. They need now to develop leaders to transform the design.

  • - Reclaiming the American Dream,

Page 17

34

slide-35
SLIDE 35
  • You have been good leaders and managers in the “Old Normal”.
  • The skill sets that made you a successful leader and manager in the

“Old Normal” may not serve you as well in the “New Normal.”

  • The skill sets that made you a successful leader and manager in the

“Old Normal” will not serve the College well in the “New Normal.”

We are going to take this path of leadership transformation together.

The “New Normal” Leader

35

slide-36
SLIDE 36
  • Proactive, innovative, & solutions finding
  • Change ready
  • Deliberate and purposeful in our actions and decisions
  • Strive for excellence; it is not OK to be satisfied with the status quo or

mediocre performance

  • Clear, concise, and intentional in our communication
  • Role model for employees and students
  • Maintain a growth mindset
  • Being resilient – use obstacle as fuel to make you stronger & wiser
  • Willingness to make the tough decisions and to live with the consequences
  • Stepping up and stepping out – being comfortable as a visionary leader

“New Normal” Requires New Set of Leadership Skills

36

slide-37
SLIDE 37
  • Analyze & Plan
  • Create strategy & plans
  • Budget
  • Set priorities
  • Do:
  • Right organization structure
  • Clear roles and responsibilities
  • Good processes and implementation
  • Review
  • Results
  • Buy-in and organizational climate
  • Project assessment

Community college leaders must ask themselves what legacy they want to leave for the next generation of community college students. Is it to be the community college of the 1970’s? Or a new model ensuring that community colleges serve the students of today and tomorrow ever more effectively. Times have changed.

  • - Reclaiming the American Dream,

Page 25

45

slide-46
SLIDE 46
  • Engaging employees so they are more receptive to engaging and

serving students.

  • Being the catalyst for creating efficient business processes and

new designs of student services that redesign students’ educational experiences.

  • Leading the way for new teaching strategies that promote active

learning and student interaction. Colleges need to find ways to make student success central to the work of everyone on campus…

  • - Reclaiming the American Dream,
