Background
Target Population
- 2,000 children ages 10-
18 that live or attend school in 70119, 70122, 70126 zip codes
- 290 completed baseline
surveys Ecological Program Model Individual: Saturday classes Interpersonal: Social Media Club Organization: Coord. School Health Community: Service Projects Policy: Advisory Council
LONG-TERM GOAL: HEALTHIER HABITS
Planning for Sustainability
- Develop and negotiate co-sponsorship agmts with key
community partners (NORDC, LPHI, Fit NOLA, Target): – Whole project, all three years, staff time
- Establish cost-share relationship with more
schools once program viability is established
– Whole project, all three years, staff time
- Explore social impact bond and community
investment financing strategies to support future staffing and community buy-in.
– Whole project, Year Three, staff time
Challenges
- Attracting and retaining older youth
- Identifying hub sites that connect with diverse
needs, interests and existing habits of our population
- Partners are underfunded in prevention
- School leadership under constant pressure to
focus attention and resources on test performance.
Potential Solutions for Challenges
- More coalition-building work
at the front end between providers and community (children + parents + teachers and other caregivers) to deepen understanding of needs, preferences, habits, etc.
- Develop jobs training program
element for older youth to support expansion of GRoW
- Build critical mass of partners
by linking anti-obesity efforts with other efforts to create whole child pipeline
- Leverage Advisory Council as
springboard towards Key Partners, Social Impact Bond and Community investment
If only I had known
- Developing a common
agenda among community partners requires committed leadership and years to cultivate
- Charter schools are
- ften insular and do
not always buy into community strategies
- Do the Website last

how hard it is to collected them…
- How hard it is for a good idea that everyone
likes to get momentum for implementation
- How the delay of local government and
- rganizations following their own rules delays
the over all progress – we didn’t plan for that in
