Today There was a group of men sitting around and talking about good and bad

  • memories. As a result of their discussion, a wager was put on about reciting

something, and one young lad stood up and recited, “The Lord is my Shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.” He had had some dramatic training with his delivery and diction, and his delivery was very good – indeed, it was so very, very effective and he had to recite the psalm a second and third time to thunderous applause. The second guy got up – he was an elderly man who had a stoop and it was difficult to hear

  • him. He was bent down and, away over in the corner, he recited,

“The Lord is my Shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.” And when he was finished there was total silence around the room, as each man bowed his head and began to pray quietly to himself. The young man who recited the psalm the first time, explained the two totally different receptions to the same psalm, and he said, “It’s fairly obvious that I know the psalm, but that old man knows the Shepherd.” The problem with us is that we know the psalm. We have learned all the answers, but we mightn’t know the Shepherd. If I don’t know the Shepherd, (because Christianity is about a person, Jesus Christ), then nobody will pray when I speak. • provided. If you can spare

some time to help keep the paths clean and prevent them from becoming slippery, please contact the Cathedral Office. Second Collection There will be a second collection this weekend in respect of Church Maintenance. Recital Series in Cathedral Hall Our Sunday Recital Series resumes on Sunday 9th February at 12.50pm with a recital by Annie Dersy (soprano) with a programme of music by Handel, Mozart and Quilter. World Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life In 1997, Pope Saint John Paul II instituted a day of prayer for women and men in consecrated life. This celebration is attached to the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2nd. This Feast is also known as Candlemas Day; the day on which candles are blessed symbolizing Christ who is the light of the world. So too, those in consecrated life are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ to all peoples. May they always reveal the love of Christ to those they encounter and continue to enrich our world by their dedicated lives of prayer.

Fr Biju Joseph will be leaving us this Tuesday 4th February. Fr Biju has finished his period of service in the Diocese and having successfully completed his M.Sc Studies at Derby University, he is going home to India to take up an appointment in his home

  • Diocese. It will be sad to see him go but we wish him well in his new ministry and a

safe journey back home. Church Student ~ Maurice Taylor We extend our “Thanks” and good wishes to our Seminarian Maurice Taylor who has been with us for the last four weeks and will be returning to the Royal English College of St Alban, Valladolid to continue his studies.
