  • Shenhua, the largest coal

producer in China

  • Zhunger is the largest open

pit mine in China

  • Located in Erdos, Inner

Mongolia

  • 15 mil tpa open pit mine
  • Introduced the first Dragline
  • Target to achieve 20 mil tpa

coal production with introduction of the dragline

  • Orica helped with the cast

blasting technology

  • Build the bulk explosives

plant

  • Introduced mobile

explosives manufacturing technology

What our Customers want transition from standard stand up blasting to cast blasting Improve the dragline efficiency through cast blasting increase the coal output to 20 mil tpa reduce the mining cost through better blasting performance (fragmentation, powder factor) Improve the mining safety through better application of the explosives, eliminating the misfires, fly rocks, vibration, fumes

What Orica has done Helped with the introduction of the cast blasting technology, transitioning from standard 15 m bench to 45 m high bench Introduced the bulk explosives technology, built a modern bulk explosives plant, better explosives products Introduced the mobile explosives manufacturing trucks provided high quality detonators to improve the blasting performance, eliminating the misfires, reduce the vibration blasting software to help optimisation of the blasting design

Cast Blasting

  • The controlled placement of overburden by drilling and blasting to achieve the minimum
  • verall overburden removal cost
  • Blasting can move + 30% of overburden into final position in 10 secs and requires little capital.
  • The remaining 70% takes weeks to move using considerable capital and labor
  • Blasting also affects this 70% by determining muckpile shape, diggability and bucket fill factors
  • Orica has technology such as blast modelling to produce the right results based on site

requirements

Traditional Blast

  • Multiple passes for large benches
  • Single type of explosive used
  • Very little throw
  • Lots of post-blast muckpile shaping required
  • 15 m high bench

Cast Blast

  • Multiple explosive products used
  • > 30% throw
  • Greatly reduced rehandle
  • Less post-blast muckpile shaping required
  • 45 m high bench

A journey…

  • 2007

Now

  • Heidaigou mine reaches 30 mil tpa capacity
  • Annual savings in ~ $100 mil
  • Cast blasting technology written into Chinese mining

test books

  • Much reduced vibration
  • Single blast 2 mil BCM every 3 weeks
  • Electronic blasting in 2010
slide-19
SLIDE 19
  • Safer mining operations
  • Higher productivity
  • Lower mining cost
  • Sustainable development

Power in Partnership

Our role is

to use energy to consistently convert rock mass into broken rock at the right time and to the right requirements for the next stages

How Technology helps our Customers

Assist our Customers to meet their targets via increased productivity

Improved coal recovery is the big win

Reducing coal loss / increasing coal recovery Improved throw blasting

  • utcomes, reducing

dragline electricity consumption per tonne of coal produced Improved ‘diggability’, yielding a significant increase in coal exposure rate, also reducing environmental emissions from the mining process Decreasing the number of drill and blast cycles required to recover the same amount of coal
