Mass Dog Vaccination in Rabies Elimination

MDV is important intervention for achieving elimination of rabies The regional and country strategies are now targeting MDV MDV is found to develop herd immunity to a level, that can contribute in consistent reduction and elimination of rabies In countries of south America and some countries of Asia and Africa also, MDV has been campaigned generating evidences of success in elimination of rabies

MDV Initiative and Coverage

Many rabies endemic countries of Asia and Africa are yet to campaign MDV They are facing problems in prioritization, planning and mobilization of resources. Catching stray dogs the first and most difficult step in MDV. It requires involvement of different sectors, expertise, fund and commitment.

Livestock Department: Yet to take responsibility

The vaccination of roaming dogs also belongs to no man's land The public health problem lies with human, the responsibility of MDV lies with livestock Vaccinating unworthy dog is not a priority for livestock The problem of rabies in cattle is also not well reported, thereby masking the burden. It did not happen in many countries that, DLS&A came forward for conducting MDV.

Role of Health Department

Health department faced the pressure of addressing dog as source of rabies as humans are fatal victim. So, it is the public health of many countries of South America, Africa and Asia that have started to take the responsibility of conducting MDV.

Characteristics of successful MDV

The campaign itself also deserves few characteristics to be effective and feasible;

  • the duration to short,
  • vaccine should be of quality,
  • target coverage to be achieved,
  • campaign should be cost effective and affordable

and reproducible.

  • It is also important to have capacity building

through piloting and scale up campaigns to ensure coverage of a whole country or a whole region within shortest possible time.

Requisites for Completing Three Rounds MDV

Monetary resource is one of the most important component to complete three rounds of MDV; International development organizations and partners should convene together to realize this important public health initiatives; Vaccine bank for animal rabies has contributed significantly in scaling up in countries like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Philippines in Asia.

slide-23
SLIDE 23

Conclusion

For achieving rabies free world we need to tackle MDV as a totality.
