Breastfeeding - A climate-smart decision

 The production, packaging, distribution and preparation processes of milk formulae, as with most processed food production, requires energy. Milk formula production is an important source of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions  Increasing use of unnecessary follow-on and toddler milk formulas aggravate the problem  Direct breastfeeding and hand expression of breastmilk are efficient in terms of reducing waste and saving energy and other resources

Breastfeeding

 Feasible for all  For busy mothers, working mothers A main reason for mothers to resort to other types of feeding  Myths created for generations by unethical marketing  NOT due to a physiological requirement Note - Toddler milks unnecessary and can be unsuitable to the nutrition

Exagg ggerated need for formula milk

ilk is is la largely created by mil

ilk food in industry ry

  • Easy to breastfeed & easy to feed with expressed BM
  • Skilled & timely support needed to initiate and continue BF properly

Myth 1 - BF is difficult & Formula feeding easy

  • Practice age appropriate breastfeeding

Myth 2 - A lot of milk is still needed after starting CF

  • Age appropriate breastfeeding does not require a lot of breast milk or a

number of feeds

  • A mother CAN produce breastmilk to match the breastfeeding demand –

even to feed more than one baby (multiple births..)

Myth 3 - A mother cannot produce adequate milk when the baby is growing

Age appropriate breastfeeding is EASY No need to breastfeed all the time or give a lot of BM In the first 6 months whenever the baby becomes hungry

After starting on complementary food Breastfeed after meals

&

  • nce or twice in the night if needed
  • nly

DO NOT wake the baby up for feeds After the first year 2-3 times a day after meals

1 kg of formula adds between 11 and 14 kgs CO2 eq. of GHG to the planet by the time it is fed to children
