  1. Brazil’s rendezvous with Propane Presented by: Edgard Soares, National expert, UNIDO July 16, 2020

  2. Agenda • Key Stakeholders for Project Implementation • Project Goals • Companies • R-290 chillers / Installation • Barriers • Key Findings 2

  3. Key Stakeholders for Project Implementation • Brazilian Ministry of Environment • UNITED NATIONS INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT ONGANIZATION (UNIDO) • Multilateral Fund (MLF) / Montreal Protocol 3

  4. RAC Montreal Protocol Project Goals in Brazil • HCFC-22 Phase-out in the retail sector; • Product with low impact to the global climate system ; • Safe conversion of the production line and the facilities; • Demonstrate current solution • Raise awareness in the supermarket sector. Solution: R-290 Modular Chillers 4

  5. Companies Eletrofrio Plotter Racks Manufacture commercial refrigeration equipment ! HCFC HFC CO 2 R-290 5

  6. Assembly Area Refrigerant handling package • Charge Machine • Leak detector • Vacuum pump • Tool for sealing process tube • Recovery unit for defective units Safety Measures • Ventilation • Sensors and alarms for R-290 • Antistatic painting or antistatic mat 6

  7. Charging Area - Eletrofrio 7

  8. Charging Area - Plotter Racks 8

  9. Eletrofrio Module • 1 Compressor • 1 Condenser • 1 Evaporator • 1 Electronic expansion valve • R-290 sensor • Each module is connected to a ventilation system ATEX components Cooling capacity: 20,000 kcal/h (23.26kW) Charge: 1.9 kg of R-290 (each unit) Electrical painel Used for MT and to condense CO 2 9

  10. Condor Supermarket • Propane chiller • 6 modules • 20,000 kcal/h (23.26kW)/unit • Charge: 1.9 kg/unit • Plug-in cabinets • 26 units • Charge: 114 g/unit • Cascade CO 2 Subcritical • 2 units Propane charge: 14.36kg • LT cabinets and 2 cold rooms 10

  12. 12

  13. Plotter Racks Module • 1 Scroll compressor • 1 Microchannel condenser • 1 Brazed- plate evaporator • 1 Electronic expansion valve (EEV) • R-290 sensor • Each module is connected to a ventilation system Cooling capacity: 10,800 kcal/h (12.56kW) ATEX components Charge: 1.04 kg of R-290 (each unit) Electrical painel 13

  14. Bahamas Supermarket • Propane chiller • 3 modules • 10,800 kcal/h (12.56kW) / unit • Charge: 1.04 kg of R-290 (each unit) • Cascade CO 2 Subcritical • 2 units • LT vertical display cases Propane charge: 3.12kg 14

  15. 15

  16. 16

  17. Barriers identified for this technology • Liability • Flammability of R-290 • Uncertainty on skill level of service technicians • Cost: • Technical solutions to mitigate flammability risks has extra costs; • Main components imported; 17

  18. Key Findings of the Projects until now • The R-290 modular chiller will help both companies to develop new solutions and NEW business models. • Improvement of energy efficiency • Systems require less maintenance • Reduced installation time • Safe place to assembly and maintain chillers in the factory. 18

  19. Key Findings of the Projects until now • Refrigerant charge reduction • Do not require trained technicians in the field • Raise awareness regarding the advantages of using propane in refrigerating systems. • The adoption of the R-290 will limit the future use of synthetic refrigerant with high GWP • The project with Eletrofrio and Plotter Racks companies will result in 157.6 t of ODS elimination. 19
