For our special trip we chose to visit the family farm
- f Regina.
We met her entire family, and were treated as members of the family the whole weekend. We visited the small town of Santo Antonio de Platina and participated in their local farmers market. We experienced a traditional Brazilian Barbeque called a churrasco. We learned the history of coffee, and the process by which it is grown and farmed.
TRIP TO THE FARM
To experience what it is like to be an outsider in another culture helped us students to understand the importance of cultural awareness and holistic nursing care. Language is one barrier we faced, and this taught us to be more sensitive to patients who do not speak English. We also learned about a different health care system and realized that foreign people need help to understand our system and how to gain access to
- ur system to benefit their health.
All in all, we learned to be open-minded and sensitive to other cultures.
WHAT DID WE LEARN??
Maternity hospital for low risk pregnancies and a view of the courtyard at Capstone (mental health facility)!
