With its growing economic power, China is playing an important role in the global economy. However, the prosperity of the cities—such as those in the greater Pearl River delta (GPRD)—face new challenges such as social inequity and environmental deterioration. In this chapter, we examined the GPRD’s urban development, including urban formation, industry relocation, economic development, social inequity, and biodiversity conservation. We also explored the role of urban leadership in balancing urbanization with the urgency for economic development and sustainability of the
activity theory within the area of sustainability to determine an inclusive structure for effective environmental leadership.

About the book: The focus on Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in recent years has opened up new
Educational Resources (OERs) which aim to ensure wider access to open licensed available
the development and availability of OERs, there is a need for national policies and large scale strategic and purposeful initiatives. Nowadays, with the growing interest in free online learning, these initiatives should be repurposed to be inclusive and to promote open access to all available online course content whatever its shape, OERs, OpenCourseWare (OCW) or Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC). This book will focus on reviewing existing policies, guidelines and initiatives to promote the use of ICT in education through the development and use of open educational resources from the international practices, including implementation and licensing issues. With particular focus on the new trends of MOOC, the book will explore the potential of this emerging paradigm, and its rise and impact on openness in education.

Focus on the essential information
About the book: This book focuses on the emerging phenomenon of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) that is changing the fundamentals of educational systems worldwide and forcing educators and other stakeholders to re-think the way instruction is currently conducted. We review the origins of MOOCs within the context of open education movement. We then evaluate existing policies, guidelines and initiatives to promote the use of ICT in education through the development and use of open educational resources based on international practices, including implementation and licensing issues. Focusing on the new trends of MOOCs, we explore the potential of this emerging paradigm, and its rise and impact on openness in education. Various new initiatives will also be discussed using examples that have had global impact as well as those that are more regionally focused. The aim of this book is to serve as a stepping stone for both researchers and practitioners who are interested in the educational impact of MOOCs from a more holistic perspective.

The United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, initiated in 2005, aims to develop and implement educational programs that focus on the three pillars of sustainability; i.e., environment, economy, and society. APIEL was established in line with the Japanese government’s initiative to promote sustainability education in higher education institutions and to nurture environmental leaders. Since the concept of sustainability and present-day environmental problems are featured by the complexity of issues, APIEL has paid considerable attention to trans-disciplinary and/or cross-disciplinary education. In particular, APIEL focuses on fostering student leadership through on-site curriculum development. At the core of the on-site curriculum, there is a course entitled as “Field Exercise” built for the purpose of practical learning. To guarantee the diversity of education methodologies and educational effects, APIEL’s field exercise units can be roughly classified as either field-oriented
