Back to Basics: How to Write a Good Paragraph

  • A paragraph is a piece of writing that consists of several sentences. A paragraph should be

easy to read and always have complete, correct, and concise sentences. Paragraph structure:

  • 1. Topic sentence- motivates the reader to want to read more.
  • 2. First main point- proves or explains the topic sentence.
  • 3. Second main point- provides a reason for the first point made.

4.Third main point- can help prove the topic sentence or back up the first or second main point of the paragraph.

  • 5. Conclusion- sums up the main points or ideas and it usually completes the topic.

Example of a Good Paragraph:

Lily grew up in the countryside with her despicable aunt and uncle. She often dreamt about running away in search of a new, kinder family that wouldn’t force her to take care of her delinquent cousins, Jim and Tim. A remarkably intelligent and resilient girl, Lily knows that a better life awaits her in Dublin city, where she can attain her life-long dream of becoming an actress. On her thirteenth birthday, Lily finally decides that the time to pursue her dream is now.
