Recently, new applications have been developed for Apple’s iPhone, iPad, and iPod and the Google Play Store that have led some to believe that the applications would allow Catholics to go to Confession on the phone or online. A few years ago one

  • f the first apps appeared that was called “Confession: A Ro-

man Catholic App.” I had someone come for reconciliation who admitted that they had not been to confession to see a priest in a few years, but that they had been using the app on their iPhone to confess their sins. I had to give him/her the sad news that there was no ‘sanctifying grace’ involved or impart- ed with using their phone. The Sacrament of Confession is not something that can be sub- stituted by a computer application. These apps are good in the sense that they can help Catholics “PREPARE” for confession by offering a “step-by-step” guide to the sacrament and as a means for an examination of conscience. They also list the various forms of the Act of Contrition. The very essence of the sacrament of grace involves the one-to-one dialogue between the confessor and the priest who is present ‘in persona Chris- ti,’ (in the person of Christ) and by the absolution given by the priest.

World Marriage Day will be celebrated on Sunday, February 9. For this celebration, the Vocation Office

  • f the Diocese has provided our parishes with a prayer

card which will be attached to bulletins next weekend to support the dignity of marriage and those preparing for mar-

  • riage. In an age in which marriage and the value of wedding vows

are under attack, let us pray that our efforts will support couples and the sacredness of matrimony. For as the bonds of marriage are strengthened for our people, so too will family life be strengthened and will flourish. Flu Protection for the Parishes: Precious Blood Suspension and the Sign of Peace - As part of our efforts to ensure a safe environment for our parishioners and guests the distribution of the Cup with the Precious Blood of Christ will be suspended during Mass as will be the Sign of Peace until further notice.

  • St. Joseph Guild Meeting will be Sunday, February 2, at 9:00

a.m. in the parish hall. We will discuss activities in 2020, espe- cially our fundraisers. All are encouraged to attend, especially the Heads and Co-Heads of the Circles.

  • St. John the Baptist Finance Council will meet on Thursday,

February 20, at 5:30 p.m. in the church hall. Please notify the Rectory if you are unable to attend. Sacred Heart Finance Council will meet on Sunday, February 23, at 11:30 a.m. If you plan on being absent from the meeting, please contact the Rectory.

  • St. Joseph Finance Council will have their next quarterly meet-

ing on Wednesday, April 22, at 6:00 p.m.

  • St. Benedict Cemetery Committee will have a meeting on

Wednesday afternoon, April 29, at 4:00 p.m. in the St. Joseph Par- ish Rectory. If the weather is favorable and farmers are able to get into the fields, we will postpone the meeting to another date. Hospital Visits - Due to the Health Insurance Portability and Ac- countability Act, hospital privacy regulations restrict the release of patient information. In the past, hospitals were able to contact clergy to inform them that a member of their church had been ad- mitted to a hospital. Today, a family member (or the patient) must either request that their pastor be notified or call the parish office personally to inform the parish staff that a family member is in the hospital or nursing home. ACH (Automatic Giving) is a convenient and easy way of sup- porting your parish. Forms are available in the back of church or feel free to stop by the Rectory and sign up today. Like many oth- er parishioners your ACH can be used for both your regular sup- port and for the Building Fund.

  • St. Joseph Parish: Parish Families Against Hunger (PFAH) Sec-
  • nd Collection will be taken up on Saturday, February 15 follow-

ing Communion. Please give to this very crucial collection for our unfortunate brothers and sisters in Haiti. Thank you for your gen- erosity.
