HAT IS FRENCH RENCH IMMERSION MMERSION?

French Immersion is: ench Immersion is:

 An opportunity to become bilingual while achieving

all the outcomes of the regular curricula, developed by Manitoba Education.

 A program that aims to foster an awareness and an

appreciation of the French language and culture. There is no expectation that parents speak or understand French. Communication with home is in English.

 All subjects are taught in French.  All support staff speak French.  Teachers use many techniques to help students

understand their second language.

 Children respond in English in the beginning,

then begin to use French words in their English

  • sentences. Eventually, they are able to speak in

full sentences.

 English Language Arts is introduced in Grade 2.

  • The School Division determines a student’s

eligibility for transportation with respect to provincial funding guidelines. The Province provides transportation support for students in Kindergarten to Grade 6 attending their designated school with more than 1.6 kilometres to walk in order to reach the school.

  • All noon-hour Kindergarten bus students must

be met by a parent or guardian at the bus stop.

 You can indicate your preference on the registration form.  Morning or afternoon placement depends on a number of factors, including bus transportation and daycare facilities.  We will consult parents in April and May with respect to placement needs.  Parents will be informed of final placement in June.

HAT ABOUT UT DAYCARE ARE?

The South Winnipeg YMCA/YWCA operates a Before and After School program in our building. The program has several benefits:  Students don’t have to leave the school.  Students are grouped with children from their class.  Students can take part in assemblies that take place during the other half of the school day.  Parents have more opportunity to interact with school staff. A list of daycares in our neighbourhood can be found in the registration package.

Ultimately the parents’ final decision, but

highly recommend against it until all resources have been explored.

We monitor every child’s progress very

closely and resource intervention is available.

Very few do (1-2%) at the K-6 levels, as the

difficulties the child is experiencing may be a matter of maturity or a learning disability which would affect learning in any language.

French, therefore help with English work (spelling, writing, math operations, drills) and read, read and read some more.

 Attend/participate in any activities in

French at school and in the community.
