  • High Energy physics, (CERN, ESS)
  • Astronomy, (Radio antennas and

  • High performance computing
  • GRID projects

  • Many in non technical disciplines use

standard IaaS cloud services to get ad hoc computing resources

  • Data from sources and repositories

connected to NREN networks count for 10-15% of traffic… And is only relevant for less than 1%

  • f the users
slide-5
SLIDE 5

NORDUnet

What about the rest?

  • + 80% of data repositories used in

research is on the internet

  • Universities is outsourcing everything

from email to survey tools to basic server and services,, to the cloud

  • Teachers use cloud tools to do network

simulations… not to mention collaboration tools media and streaming,,, in the cloud

slide-6

NORDUnet

Nordic infrastructure for Research & Education

What about the rest?

  • High quality access to the internet is

the most important network service for the majority of researchers and other users

  • How do we secure that we deliver

what the 100% of our users want?

What can you do as a NREN

slide-8
SLIDE 8

NORDUnet

Nordic infrastructure for Research & Education

What to do?

  • Peer directly with, or connect directly

to the major content providers and social media..

  • Be involved in major outsourcing deals

to ensure that network connectivity is part of the selection criteria,, to save money and gain quality

  • Don’t rely on standard IP Transit

connectivity, it is strangled,,

slide-9
SLIDE 9

NORDUnet

Nordic infrastructure for Research & Education

Do (settlement free) peering?

  • Cost
  • Predictability
  • Reachability
  • Not being dependent on 3rd party

network agreements

  • Quality
  • Reduced RTT - the most common

customer request for improvement

  • Not just having 2 BGP sessions

controlling your connection to the rest

  • f world
slide-10

NORDUnet

Nordic infrastructure for Research & Education

What can you do as an NREN

  • Connect to your local in country IX

20% peering

  • Get connectivity to the major IX’s in

Europe, AMSIX, LINX, DCIX,, 60% peering

  • Get connectivity to the US and connect

to locations, east, west, middle and south,,

  • it will take 3-4 years, but will mainly be cost neutral

Consolidate

  • Consolidate Peering and IP Transit in

regions

  • Europe, Americas, AsPac
  • Collaborate between regions

wikipedia

Software defined networking (SDN) is an

emerging architecture for computer networking. SDN separates the control plane from the data plane in network switches and routers. Under SDN, the control plane is implemented in software in servers separate from the network equipment and the data plane is implemented in commodity network equipment. OpenFlow is a leading SDN architecture.

  • Thus SDN allows for
  • quick experimenting and optimization of

switching/routing policies, and for

  • external access to the innards of switches and

routers that formerly were closed and proprietary.

GÉANT Bandwidth on Demand (BoD) is a service for dynamic

bandwidth provisioning across multiple networks, enabling users to instantly create dynamic point-to-point circuits through a web-based user interface.

Both is part of the SDN puzzle But If Openflow isn't the solution, What is the problem?

Beyond NREN Networks

For any of this to work beyond NREN Networks, and become more than just another “testbed”, what ever technology that is chosen must become an industry standard supported by major vendors
