3 Getting Started

– To confirm /accept your place in the degree. – Selecting units for your first year (both semesters) of study. – Enrolling in tutorials.

– Enter tutorial preferences by 5pm Monday 30 January.

  • ORIENTATION – Both of these days are compulsory!

The academic year

  • 2 Semesters per year

– February/March – June, July – November

  • Summer semester units run from November – February
  • Semester duration

– 12 weeks of teaching + one week mid-semester break

  • Note that some public holidays are not university holidays

– Labour Day, Queen’s Birthday and Melbourne Cup Day – However, Good Friday and Anzac day are public holidays!

To graduate at the end of 2019 (or 2020 for double degrees)

You Must:

  • Keep your enrolment active throughout your degree.
  • Successfully complete all core (required) units as specified in the

course map.

  • Accumulate 144 or 192 credit points towards the degree.
  • Meet year level credit point requirements.

Keeping your enrolment active

  • Enrol in units today for both semesters of 2017.
  • Enrol in tutorials and labs for each semester a couple of weeks

before the start of semester. (Allocate+ closes for sorting 30 Jan this year)

  • Meet all financial obligations.
  • Re-enrol for the next year (2018) in October 2017. (Late fines

apply).

  • Pass at least half the units taken during the academic year and not

fail any core unit more than once.

University vs. School

  • You are completely responsible for all aspects of your enrolment in

this degree.

  • This includes ensuring that you complete the correct units required

for BInfoTech – make sure you check your course map regularly.

  • Details of your enrolment and academic performance are not

released to anyone without your consent.

  • This means that others should not be used to make enrolment

enquiries/changes without signed approval from you.

Academic units

  • Units have a name and code (e.g. FIT1051 Programming

foundations in java)

  • Each unit is worth 6 credit points towards your degree.
  • Normal load involves taking 4 units per semester.
  • Overloading must be approved – check at Faculty office – for

students who have completed at least one year of university study and have achieved at least a credit average in the previous academic year.

  • Core units are compulsory for your degree. If you fail a core unit you

have to repeat the unit.

  • Elective units can be chosen within guidelines and requirements

given in the course map.

Year level requirements

  • The year of study, 1st year, 2nd year etc., is the first digit of each unit

code. – e.g. FIT1051 is first year, FIT2002 is second year.

  • In your first year all the units you take will be 1st year level units.
  • In your second and third years you can take units from any year

level, following the requirements of: – A maximum of 10 first year level units (60 points) – A minimum of 6 second year level units (36 points) – A minimum of 6 third year level units (36 points)

Teaching and study time each week

  • Lectures (2 hours per unit).
  • Tutorial and/or Laboratory (usually 1 or 2 hours per week – maybe

more).

  • Consultation (as required – tutors/lecturers available each week of

semester)

  • Revision & Preparation (8-9 hours per unit)
  • For a total of at least 12 hours per unit each week!
  • It is recommended that students do not have outside work (paid or

unpaid) for more than 12 hours per week.

  • Your WES Unit Enrolment will list the above 8 “unconfirmed” units.
  • If you are unsure about which major to choose now, enrol in the 8 units listed in WES (click
  • n “Enrol” next to each unit and submit your enrolment to confirm) to complete the

enrolment process today and consider and research your options (and change units online) before semester starts.

  • Completing these 8 units in 2017 allows you to complete all first year course and major

core requirements and keeps options open to choose any of the 5 majors when re-enrolling for second year.

  • If you know what you want to do now, change the units in WES accordingly.

Programming units

  • There are three programming units to select from:

– FIT1051 Programming fundamentals in java

  • Core for BIS major

– FIT1048 Fundamentals of C++

  • Core for Games Development major

– FIT1045 Algorithms and programming fundamentals in python

  • Core for Computer Science degree
  • Prerequisite VCE 3&4 Maths or MTH1010
  • You can study more than one programming unit.
  • FIT1040 Digital futures: adventures in programming is an introductory unit for

students not familiar with programming.

Year 12 maths

  • Some units have a prerequisite of Year 12 maths.

– FIT1045 Algorithms and programming fundamentals in python

  • Prerequisite is VCE Maths Methods or Specialist 3&4 with study

score > 25

– FIT1006 Business information analysis

  • Prerequisite is VCE Maths Methods or Specialist 3&4 with study

score > 25 or Further Maths 3&4 with study score > 30

  • If you do not meet the maths prerequisite then study MTH1010 first.

FIT1013 and IBL (BIS major students)

  • Students taking the BIS major who want to be eligible for an IBL

placement need to take FIT1013 Digital futures: IT for business.

  • This unit must be completed before going on placement.
  • Enrol into this unit if you are thinking of applying for IBL.
  • This unit runs during Second Semester.
  • The unit will be counted as an elective if you don’t get into IBL.

  • To complete the BInfoTech you must complete at least one major.

See the Enrolment Information booklet for details of each major.

  • You can also consider a second FIT major (single degree only), an

extended major, or a major and one or two minors.

  • FIT minors include: Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Data

Science, Games Design, Information and Society, IT for Business, Mobile Apps Development, Software Engineering, Web Development, Creative Computing (check the handbook for details).

  • You can also consider including a second major from another faculty

(check the handbook for details).

Double Degrees

The Bachelor of Information Technology is also offered as a double degree with Arts, Science, Business, Business Specialist, Commerce and Commerce Specialist, Design, Education (Hons), Engineering and Fine Art. The Faculty of IT manages the Arts and Science double degrees. Students enrolling these double degrees today need to follow the relevant course map for their preferred major. Course details are in the double degree Enrolment Information booklet.

Credit transfer

Students who have already completed some tertiary study may be eligible for credit. – For credit you must provide: an official academic transcript and unit information (for example Handbook entries) showing what you studied and how it was assessed. – These students should stay back after this enrolment session for advice.

Allocate+

  • Allocate+ is a preference-based entry system, not first come, first

served.

  • Specify your personal preferences for timeslots that you would like

to attend.

  • Preferences are collected, ranked, randomised and sorted.
  • Once Allocate+ is open in Allocation Adjustment mode (6 February),

you may view your clash free timetable.

  • If you are not happy with your allocation, or have not been allocated

to an activity, you may choose from available remaining timeslots for an instant allocation.

  • An information session for prospective BInfoTech IBL students will

be held during the first week of semester. Keep an eye on the IBL website and check your emails for further details.

  • If you are not an IBL student, but would like to be one, this

presentation helps you maximise your chances of getting into the IBL program.

  • Don’t attend if you are already an IBL student.
  • IBL is now available for local and international students

1. International students: complete course enrolment form and have it signed off by a staff member. (Students with credit enquiries stay here) 2. Domestic students: proceed to computer labs at 14 Rainforest Walk and complete enrolment online – record all transaction numbers. 3. Select your tutorial preferences in Allocate+ as soon as possible! 4. Read all the information contained in your folder, put important dates in diary. 5. Watch for mail from Monash. All correspondence usually requires some action from
